Automatic determination of rental car term associated with a vehicle collision repair incident
First Claim
1. An accident detection and recovery system comprising:
- a mobile computing device, comprising;
a vehicle on-board diagnostic port interface;
a movement sensor; and
a location sensor;
wherein the mobile computing device is configured to automatically detect, using at least one of;
the movement sensor, the location sensor, and the vehicle on-board diagnostic port interface, that the mobile computing device is within a vehicle that was involved in an accident; and
a server computer, comprising;
a processor;
a hardware memory unit; and
a network interface circuitry communicating coupling the server computer to the mobile computing device;
wherein the hardware memory unit stores non-transitory executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the server computer to;
receive data collected using the mobile computing device;
determine one or more accident characteristics associated with the accident;
determine, based on the accident characteristics and the received data, an amount of potential damage associated with the accident;
calculate, in an automated way without a human insurance adjuster, an amount of time required to repair the amount of potential damage;
based on the calculated amount of time, determine a rental car credit amount associated with the accident;
send the rental car credit amount to at least one repair shop server;
receive confirmation from a selected repair shop server of the at least one repair shop server to accept the rental car credit amount; and
update a rental car data aggregator with the one or more accident characteristics associated with the accident and the confirmation.

Abstract
One or more devices in an accident detection and recovery computing system may be configured to determine that vehicle accidents have occurred, collect and analyze accident characteristics and other related data, and providing customized accident recovery services. Mobile computing devices, alone or in combination with vehicle-based systems and external devices, may detect accidents or receive accident indication data. After determining that an accident has occurred, mobile computing devices and/or vehicle-based systems may be configured to determine accident characteristics, and then determine the damages or potential damages resulting from the accident. With an estimated assessment of damage, an accurate estimated of the amount of time to repair the damaged vehicle may be calculated, thus an automatic determination of the amount of time a user may need a rental car during the vehicle collision repair may occur.
