Abstract

Disclosed are various embodiments for transmitting energy conveyed in the form of a guided surface-waveguide mode along a lossy conducting medium such as, e.g., the surface of a terrestrial medium by exciting a polyphase waveguide probe. A probe control system can be used to adjust the polyphase waveguide probe based at least in part upon characteristics of the lossy conducting medium.

Claims

1. A system, comprising:

a guided surface waveguide probe comprising a first charge terminal and a second charge terminal elevated above a lossy conducting medium, the guided surface waveguide probe being configured to launch a Zenneck surface wave by generating at least one resultant field that synthesizes a wave front incident at a complex Brewster angle of incidence of the lossy conducting medium; and

a probe control system configured to optimize operation of the guided surface waveguide probe by adjusting one or more operating parameters of the guided surface waveguide probe.

The system of claim 1, further comprising a remotely-located field meter in communication with the probe control system, the probe control system being configured to receive field meter data from the remotely-located field meter, and the one or more operating parameters being adjusted based at least in part on the field meter data.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the one or more operating parameters of the guided surface waveguide probe are adjusted until a maximum field strength is detected by the remotely-located field meter.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the one or more operating parameters comprise at least one of:

a distance between the first charge terminal and the second charge terminal, a self-capacitance of at least one of the first charge terminal or the second charge terminal, a bound capacitance of at least one of the first charge terminal or the second charge terminal, a phase of at least one of the first charge terminal or the second charge terminal, or a magnitude of at least one of the first charge terminal or the second charge terminal.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the probe control system is further configured to at least detect a condition associated with the guided surface waveguide probe, wherein the one or more operating parameters are adjusted in response to detecting the condition.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the condition comprises at least one of a field strength, a conductivity of the lossy conducting medium, a real power delivery of an excitation source coupled to the guided surface waveguide probe, or an overloading of the excitation source.

7. The system of claim 1, further comprising an excitation source coupled to the guided surface waveguide probe.

8. A method, comprising:

launching a Zenneck surface wave, via a guided surface waveguide probe, by exciting a first charge terminal and a second charge terminal of the guided surface waveguide probe to generate at least one resultant field that synthesizes a wave front incident at a complex Brewster angle of incidence of a lossy conducting medium; and

adjusting one or more operational parameters of the guided surface waveguide probe to improve operation of the guided surface waveguide probe in response to detecting a condition associated with the guided surface waveguide probe.

The method of claim 8, wherein generating the at least one resultant field that synthesizes the wave front incident at the complex Brewster angle of incidence further comprises substantially mode-matching the at least one resultant field to a Zenneck surface wave mode on a surface of the lossy conducting medium.

10. The method of claim 8, further comprising detecting the condition based at least in part on one or more monitored characteristics associated with the guided surface waveguide probe.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein detecting the condition comprises receiving data from one or more remotely-located monitoring devices.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the one or more remotely-located monitoring devices comprise at least one of:

a field meter or a ground parameter meter.

13. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

generating a guided field strength curve based at least in part on a conductivity and a permittivity of an area associated with the guided surface waveguide probe; and

determining whether optimal transmission of the Zenneck surface wave is achieved by comparing one or more measured field strengths associated with the at least one resultant field with the guided field strength curve.

14. The method of claim 8, wherein the condition comprises at least one of a field strength, a conductivity of the lossy conducting medium, a real power delivery of an excitation source coupled to the guided surface waveguide probe, or an overloading of the excitation source.

15. The method of claim 8, wherein the one or more operational parameters comprises at least one of:

a distance between the first charge terminal and the second charge terminal, a self-capacitance of at least one of the first charge terminal or the second charge terminal, a bound capacitance of at least one of the first charge terminal or the second charge terminal, a phase of at least one of the first charge terminal or the second charge terminal, or a magnitude of at least one of the first charge terminal or the second charge terminal.

16. A system comprising:

a guided surface waveguide probe configured to launch a Zenneck surface wave by generating at least one resultant field that synthesizes a wave front incident at a complex Brewster angle of incidence of a lossy conducting medium;

one or more remotely-located monitoring devices configured to generate data associated with the guided surface waveguide probe; and

a probe control system configured to improve transmission of the Zenneck surface wave by adjusting one or more operational parameters of the guided surface waveguide probe based at least in part on the data received from the one or more remotely-located monitoring devices.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the probe control system is further configured to at least detect a change in at least one of a conductivity of the lossy conducting medium or a change in electric field strength based at least in part on the generated data.

The system of claim 16, wherein the guided surface waveguide probe comprises a first charge terminal, a second charge terminal, and a coupling circuit coupled to the first charge terminal and the second charge terminal via at least one variable tap, and the coupling circuit being configured to impose a plurality of voltage magnitudes and a plurality of phases on the first charge terminal and the second charge terminal.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein adjusting the one or more operational parameters of the guided surface waveguide probe further comprises adjusting a position of the at least one variable tap.

The system of claim 16, wherein the guide surface waveguide probe further comprises a first charge terminal and a second charge terminal, and adjusting the one or more operational parameters further comprises adjusting at least one of a phase or a magnitude of at least one of the first charge terminal or the second charge terminal.
