Connection management of smart devices with automobile head unit
First Claim
1. A method to establish a network connection between a head unit of an automobile and a mobile device, comprising:
- sending, from the mobile device to the head unit, a request to pair the mobile device prior to an establishment of a short range wireless connection between the mobile device and the head unit;
receiving, at the mobile device, identification of the head unit solely in response to the pairing request, without requiring user interaction with a user interface of the head unit;
displaying, by the mobile device, the identification of the head unit to a user of the mobile device;
receiving, at the mobile device, a selection of the head unit from the user of the mobile device;
in response to the user selecting the head unit, sending pairing information for the mobile device to the head unit;
receiving, from the head unit, a request for authorization to disconnect an already connected mobile device that is using a same short range wireless protocol as the short range wireless connection between the mobile device and the head unit;
in response to receiving input at the mobile device with the authorization, sending the authorization from the mobile device to the head unit to cause the head unit to disconnect the already connected mobile device; and
in response to the mobile device being paired with the head unit based on the pairing information for the mobile device, without requiring user interaction with the user interface of the head unit, and the establishment of the short range wireless connection between the mobile device and the head unit, receiving, at the mobile device, a pairing-completion indication from the head unit.

Abstract
Embodiments are directed towards establishing a network connection between a mobile device and an automobile head unit. A user of the mobile device interacts with a user interface on the mobile device to establish the connection with the head unit. If authorized, the head unit disconnects a currently connected device if the connection is to be via classic Bluetooth protocols. If the head unit has reached a maximum number of registered mobile devices, then the head unit sends a request to the mobile device for a selection of which currently registered mobile devices are to be unregistered. The head unit registers the mobile device with the head unit and establishes the connection between the mobile device and the head unit via classic Bluetooth protocols or Bluetooth Low Energy protocols depending on the type of connection request.

6. A user device, comprising:
-
a display screen; a memory that is configured to store computer instructions; and a processor that is configured to execute the computing instructions and; generate a request to register the user device with a head unit of an automobile prior to the establishment of a short range wireless connection between the user device and the head unit; receive, from the head unit, identification information for the head unit, display, via the display screen, at least a portion of the identification information to a user of the user device; receive a selection of the head unit from the user; in response to the user selection of the head unit, generate a registration-information signal for the user device to be transmitted to the head unit; receive, from the head unit, a request for authorization to disconnect an already connected user device that is using a same short range wireless protocol as the short range wireless connection; in response to the receipt of input from the user with the authorization, send the authorization to the head unit to cause the head unit to disconnect the already connected user device; and in response to the registration of the user device with the head unit based on the registration information for the user device, without user interaction with a user interface of the head unit, and the subsequent establishment of the short range wireless connection between the user device and the head unit, display, via the display screen, a registration- completion indication to the user. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8, 9, 10)

11. A head unit, comprising:
-
a display device that is configured to display a user interface; a memory that is configured to store computer instructions; and a processor that is configured to execute the computing instructions and; receive, from a user device, a request to pair the user device with the head unit prior to the establishment of a short range wireless connection between the user device and the head unit based solely on the request from the user device; provide, to the user device, information for the head unit for display to a user of the user device, in response to a user selection of the head unit, receive pairing information for the user device; provide, to the user device, a request for authorization to disconnect an already connected user device that is using a same short range wireless protocol as the short range wireless connection; in response to the receipt of the authorization from the user device, disconnect the already connected user device from using the same short range wireless protocol; register the user device as being paired with the head unit based on the pairing information for the user device, without direct user interaction with the user interface of the head unit; provide an indication to the user device that the user device is paired with the head unit; and establish the short range wireless connection between the user device and the head unit. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17)
