System and method for controlling a transverse phacoemulsification system using sensed data
First Claim
1. An apparatus configured for use in an ocular surgical procedure, comprising:
- a handpiece having a tip configured to ultrasonically vibrate, the handpiece configured to support a plurality of operating modes comprising a first operating mode and a second operating mode, wherein the plurality of operating modes are selected from the group consisting of transversal, longitudinal, and torsional;
a user interface configured to receive a relationship between a change in a system parameter and a change in a ratio between the first operating mode and the second operating mode, from a user;
a sensor configured to provide the change in the system parameter; and
a controller connected to the handpiece, the user interface, and the sensor, wherein the controller is configured to;
receive the relationship,receive the change in the system parameter,determine an operational ratio between the first operating mode and the second operating mode based on the change in the system parameter and the relationship;
dynamically select at least one operational parameter associated with the first operating mode and at least one operational parameter associated with the second operating mode, andconcurrently modify the at least one operational parameter associated with the first operating mode and the at least one operational parameter associated with the second operating mode to obtain the operational ratio between the first operating mode and the second operating mode.

Abstract
A method and system for use in an ocular surgical procedure is provided. The design includes a handpiece having an ultrasonically vibrating tip operational within a plurality of operating modes including a first operating mode and a sensing device, such as a vacuum pressure sensor. A controller is connected to the handpiece and sensing device and is configured to receive data from the sensing device and adjust at least one operational parameter (time/duty cycle of operation, power during operation) associated with the first operating mode and adjust at least one parameter associated with another operating mode based on the data received from the sensing device. Operational modes may include multiple longitudinal or non-longitudinal modes (torsional, transversal, etc.) or combinations of longitudinal and/or non-longitudinal modes.
