Abstract

Methods and systems for cost effectively transforming lower quality sands into higher quality sands for use as proppants in fracking operations. One or more of an attrition process, a microwaving process and a tumbling process, and systems therefor, are disclosed and shown to be applied to sands having inferior physical properties in order to increase the performance of those sands as proppants in hydrocarbon formation fracturing.

Claims

1. A method of increasing the crush resistance of silica sand used as proppant to fracture hydrocarbon formations, the method including:

washing silica sand having a preselected range of grain particle size in a washer to remove impurities;

exposing at least a portion of the washed silica sand to electromagnetic radiation for a period of time of at least thirty seconds, the electromagnetic radiation being generated from a local electromagnetic radiation source and having a frequency of between about 300 MHz and about 300 GHz;

adding the silica sand to a sand tumbler to be rotated, and

tumbling the silica sand in the sand tumbler for a period of at least about five minutes.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength of between about one meter and about one millimeter.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the electromagnetic radiation has a frequency of between about 1200 MHz and about 2700 MHz.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the electromagnetic radiation has a wavelength of between about 110 millimeters and about 250 millimeters.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the washing of the silica sand is conducted with an acidic solution.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the acidic solution comprises a hydrochloric acid solution.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the washing of the silica sand is conducted with an ammonium chloride solution.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the ammonium chloride solution comprises a least about ten weight percent ammonium chloride.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the washing of the silica sand is conducted with an organic removal agent.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the organic removal agent comprises tetrahydrofuran.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising drying the washed silica sand in a dryer to remove any moisture.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising placing the washed silica sand on a conveyor, moving the conveyor after the washed sand has been placed thereon at a selected rate, and exposing the washed silica sand on the conveyor to the electromagnetic radiation being generated from the local electromagnetic radiation source for the period of time.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the washed silica sand is exposed to electromagnetic radiation for at least about two minutes.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the washed silica sand is exposed to electromagnetic radiation for at least about five minutes.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the local electromagnetic radiation source is a magnetron.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein tumbling of the silica sand begins within at least about one minute of the silica sand being exposed to the electromagnetic radiation.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein tumbling of the silica sand occurs for at least about fifteen minutes.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein tumbling of the silica sand occurs for at least about thirty minutes.

19. The method of claim 1, further comprising rotating the tumbler at a minimum of five revolutions per minute.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein after exposing the washed silica sand to the electromagnetic radiation, the specific gravity of the silica sand is greater than about 2.50.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein proppant conductivity of the silica sand exposed to electromagnetic radiation is increased.

24. The method of claim 1, wherein the silica sand in the sand tumbler is tumbled at a temperature to facilitate alteration of silica sand grains in a shorter period of time.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the silica sand in the sand tumbler is maintained at the temperature of about 125°

F. to about 180°

F. during tumbling.

21. A method of increasing the crush resistance of silica sand used as proppant in hydrocarbon formation fracturing, the method comprising

washing silica sand having a preselected range of grain particle size in a washer to remove impurities;

and

exposing at least a portion of the washed silica sand to electromagnetic radiation for a preselected period of time, the electromagnetic radiation being generated from a local electromagnetic radiation source and having a frequency of between about 300 MHz and about 300 GHz.

22. A method of claim 21, further comprising tumbling the silica sand after exposure to the electromagnetic radiation in a sand tumbler for a preselected period of time.

26. The method of claim 21, wherein proppant conductivity of the silica sand exposed to electromagnetic radiation is increased.

27. The method of claim 22, wherein the tumbling of the silica sand in the sand tumbler is at a temperature to facilitate alteration of silica sand grains.
