Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a housing for a laparoscopic trocar assembly with an integrated scope-cleaning structure. The housing may include a shell forming a wall portion of a chamber and a cleaning element forming at least a portion of an internal surface of the chamber, the cleaning element configured to remove debris from a distal end of a scope upon contact between the cleaning element and the distal end of the scope. The cleaning element may be movable with respect to the shell of the housing in response to an input force upon the shell that moves a portion of the shell and a portion of the cleaning element between a default state and a displaced state.

Claims

1. A housing for a laparoscopic trocar assembly with an integrated scope-cleaning structure, the housing comprising:

a shell forming a wall portion of a chamber; and

a cleaning element that is located proximal a cannula with the cannula extending distally away from the chamber, the cleaning element forming at least a portion of an internal surface of the chamber, the cleaning element configured to remove debris from a distal end of a scope upon contact between the cleaning element and the distal end of the scope,

wherein the cleaning element is movable with respect to the shell of the housing in response to an input force upon the shell that moves a portion of the shell and a portion of the cleaning element between a default state and a displaced state.

2. The housing of claim 1, further comprising an external surface at least partially formed by the shell, wherein an external facing surface of the cleaning element forms at least a portion of the external surface of the housing.

The housing of claim 1, wherein the cleaning element is formed of a resilient material such that the cleaning element includes a tendency to assume the default state in the absence of an input force, and wherein the default state forms an external shape that is generally continuous with the shell, or that extends from the shell in a visually-contrasting manner.

4. The housing of claim 1, further comprising at least one button coupled to the cleaning element, wherein the input force is applied to the at least one button, and wherein the at least one button is movable with respect to the chamber in response to the input force.

5. The housing of claim 1, wherein the cleaning element includes an opening longitudinally aligned with a longitudinal axis of a cannula extending distally from the housing when the cleaning element is in the default state.

6. The housing of claim 5, further comprising a divider separating the chamber into a proximal portion and a distal portion, the divider including an opening aligned with the opening of the cleaning element.

7. The housing of claim 6, wherein the divider comprises a second cleaning element located in the proximal portion of the chamber.

8. The housing of claim 7, wherein the second cleaning element includes a curved concave proximal-facing surface.

9. The housing of claim 1, wherein the cleaning element includes a stepped portion with an edge.

10. A housing for a laparoscopic trocar assembly with an integrated scope-cleaning structure, the housing comprising:

an outer shell with a proximal entry opening through a proximal wall, a distal exit opening to a cannula that extends distally from a distal wall of the outer shell, and a generally cylindrical wall therebetween, the generally cylindrical wall circumferentially defining a chamber at least partially proximal the cannula and being deformable; and

an inner surface of the generally cylindrical wall comprising at least one cleaning element with a cleaning surface within the chamber, the cleaning surface configured to contact and to remove debris from at least a viewing element of a scope when the generally cylindrical wall is deformed and the at least a viewing element is within the chamber.

11. The housing of claim 10, wherein the outer shell proximal entry opening forms a fluid-patent seal around a scope directed therethrough.

The housing of claim 11, wherein the cleaning surface is comprised by a more-flexible wall portion of the generally cylindrical wall, immediately adjacent a less-flexible outermost periphery of the proximal wall of the outer shell, the more-flexible wall portion configured to displace inwards with respect to the chamber in response to an input force directed toward a central region of the generally cylindrical wall.

13. The housing of claim 10, wherein the cleaning surface is formed of a compliant material continuous with the generally cylindrical wall.

14. The housing of claim 10, wherein the cleaning element forms at least a portion of an inner-facing longitudinal and circumferential surface of the housing.

15. The housing of claim 10, wherein the cleaning element is movable with respect to the outer shell of the housing in response to an input force between a generally cylindrical default state and a displaced state.

16. The housing of claim 15, wherein the cleaning element is formed of a resilient material such that the cleaning element includes a tendency to assume the default state in the absence of an input force.

17. The housing of claim 10, wherein the cleaning element includes a stepped portion with an edge.

18. A method for cleaning a scope, the method comprising:

maneuvering a distal end of the scope proximally out of a cannula to a location within a chamber of a trocar assembly, the chamber at least partially formed by a shell wherein a cleaning element comprises a surface within the chamber;

moving the cleaning element from a default state to a displaced state by displacing an external-facing surface of the chamber inwardly; and

removing debris from at least a distal-facing surface of the scope moving the scope and in contact with a cleaning element.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein moving the cleaning element includes applying an input force to a button comprised by the external-facing surface of the chamber, wherein the button is coupled to the cleaning element.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the cleaning element is formed of a resilient material such that the cleaning element includes a tendency to assume the default state in the absence of an input force.
