1. A method for training a student to perform an emergency rescue procedure, comprising:

  • configuring a configuration option of an automatic external defibrillator (AED) trainer using a user interface of the AED trainer, wherein the AED trainer comprises a hardware platform and state machine which together simulate the appearance and operations of a target AED, wherein the user interface is provided on a display of the AED trainer, and wherein the display is located underneath an electrode tray of the AED trainer;

    providing the AED trainer to the student; and

    using the AED trainer to instruct the student, by way of synthesized voice prompts that are based on the configuration option and output by a speaker of the AED trainer, in performing a simulated rescue procedure on a manikin, wherein the simulated rescue procedure includes applying simulated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and shocks to the manikin.
