Abstract

Adaptive communications focal plane arrays that may be implemented in, e.g., a specially-configured camera that can be utilized to receive and/or process information in the form of optical beams are presented. A specialized focal plane array (FPA) having a plurality of optical detectors is utilized, where one or more optical detectors are suppressed such that data is not allowed to be output from the one or more suppressed optical detectors, and only a significantly smaller number or subset of optical detectors receiving optical beams are allowed to output data. In this way, the rate at which data is to be output by an adaptive communications FPA (ACFPA) can be significantly reduced.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

collecting optical flux received at a plurality of optical detectors;

determining whether the collected optical flux received at one or more of the plurality of optical detectors is associated with one or more optical beams being emitted by an optical transmitter of an optical communications network;

suppressing output signals from those optical detectors of the plurality of optical detectors that are not receiving optical beams from the optical transmitter of the optical communications network;

extracting optical data sequences from output signals of those optical detectors of the plurality of optical detectors that are receiving optical beams from the optical transmitter of the optical communications network; and

presenting information obtained from the optical data sequences extracted from output signals of those optical detectors that are receiving optical beams from the optical transmitter of the optical communications network.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein suppressing the output signals comprises suppressing analog signals output by the one or more of the plurality of optical detectors.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the output signals comprise one of a voltage or current comprising a measurement of the collected optical flux as a function of time.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising computing an estimate of a signal-to-noise ratio of the output signals from each the plurality of optical detectors.

The method of claim 1, further comprising maintaining suppression of the output signals from those optical detectors of the plurality of optical detectors that are not receiving optical beams from the optical transmitter of the optical communications network until the optical data sequences are extracted from the output signals of those optical detectors of the plurality of optical detectors that are receiving optical beams from the optical transmitter of the optical communications network.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising detecting additional optical data sequences from the output signals of those optical detectors of the plurality of optical detectors that are receiving optical beams from additional optical transmitters of the optical communications network.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the additional optical data sequences are distinguished based upon amplitude levels present in a single waveform representative of the collected optical flux received at the plurality of optical detectors.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising extracting the additional optical data sequences.

9. The method of claim 6, further comprising generating a notification indicating that the collected optical flux includes multiple optical data sequences from multiple optical transmitters of the optical communications network, locations of which are too close to distinguish.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising generating an instruction directing a user of a device in which the plurality of optical detectors are implemented to reposition the device to increase angular separation of the multiple optical transmitters within a field of view of the device.

11. A user device, comprising:

a plurality of optical detectors collecting optical flux transmitted by a plurality of light sources;

a discrimination circuit receiving output signals from each of the plurality of optical detectors determining whether the collected optical flux is associated with one or more optical beams including an optical data sequence being emitted by an optical transmitter of an optical communications network, the optical transmitter comprising at least one of the plurality of the light sources;

a digital signal converter extracting the optical data sequence from the output signals of those optical detectors of the plurality of optical detectors that are receiving optical beams from the optical transmitter of the optical communications network upon a determination that the collected optical flux is associated with the one or more optical beams including the optical data sequence being emitted by communications networks;

the optical transmitter of the optical communications network and

a display presenting information associated with the optical transmitter of the optical communications network embedded in the optical data sequence.

12. The user device of claim 11, further comprising a switching circuit suppressing the output signals from those optical detectors of the plurality of optical detectors that are not receiving optical beams from the optical transmitter of the optical communications network.

The user device of claim 12, wherein the switching circuit allows the output signals of those optical detectors of the plurality of optical detectors that are receiving optical beams from the optical transmitter of the optical communications network to be transmitted to the digital signal converter.

14. The user device of claim 12, wherein the switching circuit further suppresses the output signals from those optical detectors of the plurality of optical detectors that previously received optical beams from at least one additional optical transmitter of the optical communications network.

15. The user device of claim 11, further comprising an imaging lens focusing the optical beams into one or more converging beams incident on one or more of the plurality of optical detectors.

The user device of claim 11, wherein the plurality of optical detectors comprises an array of optical detectors, wherein a position of those optical detectors of the plurality of optical detectors that are receiving the optical beams from the optical transmitter of the optical communications network corresponds to an angular position of the optical transmitter within a field of view of the user device.

17. The user device of claim 11, wherein the user device comprises a wireless telephony device.

18. The user device of claim 11, wherein the information associated with the optical transmitter of the optical communications network embedded in the optical data sequence comprises identifying information regarding the optical transmitter.

19. The user device of claim 11, wherein the optical beams comprise at least one of an optical beacon and an optical signal transmitted from the optical transmitter.

20. The user device of claim 11, wherein the display presents the information associated with the optical transmitter of the optical communications network embedded in the optical data sequence overlaid onto real-time visible imagery captured by a camera of the user device.
