Abstract

A platform-to-platform communication architecture for a process control messaging service in a process control system or other industrial setting allows stationary and portable industrial computing units to communicate with each other, in one-to-one and one-to-many communications, and across networks, including isolated networks inside the process control system or industrial setting and external networks. A requesting industrial computing device platform generates a message for a destination, or responding, industrial computing device in the communication protocol of the destination platform, and wraps the message in a communication protocol of the process control messaging service. The communication architecture decodes the wrapped message into the communication protocol of the destination industrial computing device and forwards the decoded wrapped message to the destination. The communication architecture allows for a variety of communication services, including, but not limited to, instant/real-time peer-to-peer messaging, time synchronization, automatic data transfer with an asset management system, communication with field devices via an asset management system and large data transfers.

Claims

1. A method of a portable field maintenance tool interacting with a field device within a process control system, the method comprising:

communicatively coupling the portable field maintenance tool to a process control asset management system via a wireless communication channel of the process control asset management system, wherein the process control asset management system is communicatively coupled to the field device via a digital process communication channel, and wherein the portable field maintenance tool and the process control asset management system each have a framework of a communication protocol of the field device layered above a communication protocol of the process control asset management system, and the protocol of the process control asset management system layered above a network communications protocol;

interfacing a client application on the portable field maintenance tool with an asset management system application of the process control asset management system, wherein the asset management system application is adapted to communicate with the field device via the digital process communication channel; and

communicatively coupling the client application to the field device to provide the client application with read and/or write access to the field device via the process control asset management system and the digital process communication channel, wherein a communication from the client application to the field device is generated by the portable field maintenance tool in the communication protocol of the field device and wrapped in the communication protocol of the process control asset management system having a header comprising the identification of the field device and the communication protocol of the field device.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

enabling, by the portable field maintenance tool, selection of the field device via the client application;

validating, by the portable field maintenance tool, the portable field maintenance tool as registered with the process control asset management system and a user of the portable field maintenance tool as authorized to access the selected field device; and

initiating, by the portable field maintenance tool, a connection request via the wireless communication channel to a portable field maintenance tool communication server residing on the process control asset management system, wherein the connection request is for a connection between the portable field maintenance tool and the field device via the asset management system application and the digital communication system.

The method of claim 2, wherein initiating, by the portable field maintenance tool, the connection request via the wireless communication channel to the portable field maintenance tool communication server comprises issuing, by the portable field maintenance tool, a device tag of the field device, an identification of the user of the portable field maintenance tool, and an identification of the portable field maintenance tool via the wireless communication channel to the portable field maintenance tool communication server.

The method of claim 2, wherein validating, by the portable field maintenance tool, the user of the portable field maintenance tool as authorized to access the field devices comprises validating, by the portable field maintenance tool, the user of the portable field maintenance tool as having read and/or write access to the field device.

The method of claim 1, wherein interfacing the client application on the portable field maintenance tool with the asset management system application of the process control asset management system comprises interfacing the client application with a portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library of an asset management system application within the process control asset management system via the wireless communication channel, and

wherein communicatively coupling the client application to the field device comprises communicatively coupling, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, the client application to the field device.

The method of claim 5, wherein interfacing the client application with a portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library comprises interfacing the client application with a portable field maintenance tool communication server residing on the process control asset management system, wherein the portable field maintenance tool communication server is adapted to pass communications between the client application and the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library.

The method of claim 5, wherein the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library comprises a dynamic link library (DLL) adapted to provide an interface for transporting raw commands issued from the portable field maintenance tool in the communication protocol of the field device as arguments for a device communication interface method.

8. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

storing an indication of a portable field maintenance tool having a client application communicatively coupled to the field device;

storing indications of current portable field maintenance tools having a client application interfaced with the asset management system application;

returning an error if another portable field maintenance tool has a client application communicatively coupled to the field device; and

returning an error if a number of portable field maintenance tools having a client application interfaced with the asset management system application meets or exceeds predetermined a threshold amount.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the threshold amount comprises a predetermined number of licenses for portable field maintenance tools having a client application interfaced with the asset management system application.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein further comprising:

removing the indication of the portable field maintenance tool having the client application communicatively coupled to the field device in response receiving a disconnect signal issued from the portable field maintenance tool; and

decrementing the number of indications of current portable field maintenance tools having a client application interfaced with the asset management system application in response to receiving the disconnect signal.

11. The method of claim 5 further comprising:

inputting, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, a raw command for the field device from the client application of the portable field maintenance tool as an argument for a device communication interface method;

issuing, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, a device communication interface command to a process control asset management server residing on the process control asset management system and communicatively coupled to the field device, the device communication interface command wrapping the raw command for transport to the field device via the digital process communication channel;

and

issuing, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, a response to the raw command from the field device to the portable field maintenance tool communication server.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein communicatively coupling the portable field maintenance tool to the wireless communication channel comprises:

receiving, by a portable field maintenance tool communication server residing on the process control asset management system, a connection request from the portable field maintenance tool via the wireless communication channel, wherein the connection request is for a connection between the portable field maintenance tool and the field device via the asset management system application and the digital communication system;

passing the connection request from the portable field maintenance tool communication server to a portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library residing on the process control asset management system, wherein the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library provides a device communication interface for the portable field maintenance tool to connect to the field device;

validating, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, the portable field maintenance tool as registered with the process control asset management system and a user of the portable field maintenance tool as authorized to access the field device;

returning, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library to the portable field maintenance tool communication server, a result of the connection request; and

returning, by the portable field maintenance tool communication server to the portable field maintenance tool via the wireless communication channel, the result of the connection request.

The method of claim 12, wherein validating, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, the user of the portable field maintenance tool as authorized to access the field device comprises, validating, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, the user of the portable field maintenance tool as having read and/or write access to the field device.

The method of claim 12, further comprising validating, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, that the number of portable field maintenance tools communicating via the asset management system application and the digital communication system does not exceed a predetermined threshold.

15. The method of claim 12, further comprising validating, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, that no other portable field maintenance tool is communicating with the field device.

16. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

receiving, by the portable field maintenance tool communication server from the portable field maintenance tool, a raw command issued by the client application;

passing, by the portable field maintenance tool communication server to the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, the raw command from the portable field maintenance tool;

inputting, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, the raw command as an argument into a device communication interface method, the device communication interface method outputting a device communication interface command for the field device wrapping the raw command; and

issuing, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, the distributed control instrumentation command to an asset management system server communicatively coupled to the digital process communication channel.

17. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

receiving, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, a response to the device communication interface command from the field device via the digital process communication channel and the asset management system server;

passing, by the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library, the response to the portable field maintenance tool communication server; and

sending, by the portable field maintenance tool communication server, the translated response to the portable field maintenance tool.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein the interface enables the portable field maintenance tool to one or more of:

connect to the field device, send commands to the field device, receive responses from the field device and disconnect from the field device.

19. The method of claim 1, further comprising configuring the field device using the portable field maintenance tool via the digital process communication channel.

20. The method of claim 1, further comprising diagnosing the field device using the portable field maintenance tool via the digital process communication channel.

21. The method of claim 1, further comprising calibrating the field device using the portable field maintenance tool via the digital process communication channel.

22. The method of claim 1, further comprising commissioning the field device using the portable field maintenance tool via the digital process communication channel.

23. A system for interacting a portable field maintenance tool with a field device within a process control system, the system comprising:

a portable field maintenance tool communication server adapted to communicatively couple to the portable field maintenance tool via a wireless communication channel;

a process control asset management server communicatively coupled to the field device via a digital process communication channel; and

a portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library having a distributed control instrumentation interface and adapted to receive raw commands from the portable field maintenance tool via the portable field maintenance tool communication server, issue device communication interface commands wrapping the raw commands to the field device via the process control asset management server, receive responses from the field device via the process control asset management system server, and issue the responses to the portable field maintenance tool via the portable field maintenance tool communication server.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the portable field maintenance tool communication server is adapted to:

receive a connection request from the portable field maintenance tool via the wireless communication channel for a connection between the portable field maintenance tool and the field device via the digital communication system, and

pass the connection request to a portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library.

25. The system of claim 23, wherein the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library is adapted to:

validate the portable field maintenance tool as registered with the process control asset management system;

validate a user of the portable field maintenance tool as authorized to access the field device; and

return a result of the connection request to the portable field maintenance tool communication server.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the portable field maintenance tool communication server is adapted to return the result of the connection request to the portable field maintenance tool via the wireless communication channel.

27. The system of claim 25, wherein the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library is adapted to validate the user of the portable field maintenance tool as having read and/or write access to the field device.

28. The system of claim 25, wherein the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library is adapted to validate that the number of portable field maintenance tools communicating via the asset management system application and the digital communication system does not exceed a predetermined threshold.

29. The system of claim 25, wherein the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library is adapted to validate that no other portable field maintenance tool is communicating with the field device.

30. The system of claim 23, wherein the portable field maintenance tool communication server is adapted to:

receive a raw command issued by a client application on the portable field maintenance tool; and

pass the raw command to the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library.

31. The system of claim 30, wherein the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library is adapted to:

input the raw command as an argument into a device communication interface method for the field device; and

issue a device communication interface command wrapping the raw command to the asset management system server.

32. The system of claim 31, wherein the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library is adapted to:

receive a response to the device communication interface command from the field device via the asset management system server; and

pass the response to the portable field maintenance tool communication server.

33. The system of claim 27, wherein the portable field maintenance tool communication server is adapted to send the response to the portable field maintenance tool.

34. The system of claim 23 wherein the portable field maintenance tool dynamic shared library comprises a digital link library.

35. The system of claim 23, wherein the portable field maintenance tool and the process control asset management system each have a framework of a communication protocol of the field device layered above a communication protocol of the process control asset management system, and the protocol of the process control asset management system layered above a network communications protocol, and

wherein a communication from the portable field maintenance tool to the field device is generated by the portable field maintenance tool in the communication protocol of the field device and wrapped in the communication protocol of the process control asset management system having a header comprising the identification of the field device and the communication protocol of the field device.

36. The system of claim 23, wherein the portable field maintenance tool communication server is adapted to receive a connection request from a portable field maintenance tool via the wireless communication channel for a connection between the portable field maintenance tool and the field device via the digital communication system.

37. The process control asset management system of claim 36, wherein the connection request comprises a device tag of the field device, and identification of the user of the portable field maintenance tool, and an identification of the portable field maintenance tool.

38. A portable field maintenance tool comprising:

a housing;

a wireless communication interface disposed within the housing, the communication interface adapted to communicatively couple with a wireless communication channel of a process control asset management system, the wireless communication channel configured to carry an encoded communication signal transmitted to or from the process control asset management system, wherein the process control asset management system is communicatively coupled to a field device via a digital process communication channel; and

a communication circuit disposed within the housing and electrically connected to the wireless communication interface, the communication circuit adapted to encode the communication signal for the wireless communication channel by;

encoding a message from a client application executed on the portable field maintenance tool in the communication protocol of the field device;

wrapping the encoded message in a communication protocol of the process control asset management system, the wrapped, encoded message having a header comprising the identification of the field device and the communication protocol of the field device; and

encoding the wrapped, encoded message in a communication protocol of the wireless communication channel.

39. The portable field maintenance tool of claim 38, wherein the communication circuit is adapted for intrinsically safe operation.

40. The portable field maintenance tool of claim 38, further comprising:

a processor;

a memory operatively coupled to the processor; and

a user interface stored in the memory and adapted to be executed by the processor;

wherein the client application is stored in the memory, and adapted to, when executed by the processor, generate the message.

41. The portable field maintenance tool of claim 40, wherein the client application is adapted to, when executed by the processor, enable selection of one of one or more process control asset management systems presented by the user interface, and in response to a selection of a process control asset management system, enable selection of the field device managed by the selected process control asset management system.

42. The portable field maintenance tool of claim 40, wherein the client application is adapted to, when executed by the processor, enable selection of one of one or more field devices presented by the user interface, and in response to a selection of field device, generate the message, wherein the message comprises a connection request to process control asset management system to connect with the selected field device.

43. The portable field maintenance tool of claim 42, wherein the connection request comprises an identification of the portable field maintenance tool, an identification of a user of the portable field maintenance tool and an identification of the selected field device.

44. The portable field maintenance tool of claim 42, wherein the client application is adapted to, when executed by the processor, receive a result of the connection request from the process control asset management system, and in response to approval of the connection request, issue a raw command to the asset management system via the wireless communication channel, the raw command comprising a command in the communication protocol of the field device,

wherein the communication circuit adapted to encode the raw command for the wireless communication channel by:

wrapping the raw command in the communication protocol of the process control asset management system, the wrapped, encoded raw command having the header comprising the identification of the field device and the communication protocol of the field device; and

encoding the wrapped raw command in the communication protocol of the wireless communication channel.

45. The portable field maintenance tool of claim 44, wherein the client application is adapted to, when executed by the processor, receive a response from the process control asset management system and display information related to the response on the user interface.

46. The portable field maintenance tool of claim 40, wherein the client application is adapted to, when executed by the processor, validate the portable field maintenance tool as registered with the process control asset management system and a user of the portable field maintenance tool as authorized to access the selected field device.
