1. A method for detecting and controlling propagated electromagnetic radiation on a hand-held device using environmental capacitive sensing, the steps comprising:

  • measuring a capacitance of an object proximate to the hand-held device using a plurality of capacitive sensors;

    receiving data from the plurality of capacitive sensors;

    determining at least one of;

    a dielectric constant of the object based on the measured capacitance;

    a material of the object based on the dielectric constant of the object based on measured capacitance; and

    a spatial profile of the object based upon an electrostatic charge distribution represented in the received data;

    calculating the imposed impedance produced from the proximity and material of the object;

    compensating the propagated electromagnetic radiation based on the imposed impedance;

    altering the transmitted electromagnetic power distribution using a phased antenna array disposed in the hand-held device; and

    distributing transmitted electromagnetic power distribution such that the electromagnetic radiation is directed substantially away from the object.
