1. A method, comprising:

  • transmitting, using one of a broadcast channel and an RRC control message and by a base station, a value from the base station towards a plurality of user equipment including a given user equipment, where the value is indicative of what portion, as a first portion, of an uplink resource block is specified for transmission of a first type of signaling to the base station and what portion, as a second portion, of the uplink resource block is specified for transmission of a second type of signaling to the base station, where the first type of signaling comprises acknowledgement signaling and the second type of signaling comprises channel quality indicator signaling;

    receiving by the base station at least one transmission from the given user equipment a given uplink resource block having at least one of the first portion and the second portion where the given uplink resource block is one shared uplink resource block shared among the plurality of user equipment, including said given user equipment, and wherein the acknowledgement signaling and channel quality indicator signaling from the given user equipment and acknowledgement signaling and channel quality indicator signaling from at least one other user equipment is received as a multiplexed transmission in the one shared uplink resource block shared among the plurality of user equipment; and

    determining, from the received at least one transmission, one or both of acknowledgement information from the first type of signaling and channel quality indicator information from the second type of signaling based on the value and corresponding portion of the uplink resource block specified for transmission of the first type of signaling and the portion of the uplink resource block specified for transmission of the second type of signaling.
