Abstract

A corrosion inhibiting composition includes a first plurality of carriers and a second plurality of carriers. The first plurality of carriers has a first carrier body which encapsulates a film-forming compound. The second plurality of carriers has a second carrier body encapsulates a corrosion inhibitor. Each of the first and second carrier bodies is formed of a degradable material. Coatings and methods for inhibiting corrosion on a metal substrate are also described herein.

Claims

1. A corrosion inhibiting composition comprising:

a first plurality of carriers having a first average outer diameter, each comprising a first carrier body and a film forming compound, the first carrier body encapsulating the film forming compound, wherein the first carrier body is formed of a first degradable material; and

a second plurality of carriers having a second average outer diameter, each comprising a second carrier body and first corrosion inhibitor, the second carrier body encapsulating the first corrosion inhibitor, wherein the second carrier body is formed of a second degradable material that is different from the first degradable material, and wherein the first average outer diameter is different from the second average outer diameter.

2. The corrosion inhibiting composition of claim 1, wherein the ratio of the first plurality of carriers to the second plurality of carriers is greater than 1.

3. The corrosion inhibiting composition of claim 1, wherein the ratio of the first plurality of carriers to the second plurality of carriers is less than 1.

4. The corrosion inhibiting composition of claim 1, wherein the ratio of the first plurality of carriers to the second plurality of carriers is about 1.

5. The coating of claim 1, wherein the first average outer diameter is from about 1μ

m to about 2μ

m.

6. The coating of claim 1, wherein the second average outer diameter is from about 0.1μ

m to about 0.5μ

m.

7. The coating of claim 1, wherein the second average outer diameter is from about 3μ

m to about 5μ

m.

8. The corrosion inhibiting composition of claim 1, wherein the second plurality of carriers comprises microparticles wherein the first corrosion inhibitor is released from within the second carrier body upon chemical cleavage of the second degradable material.
