Abstract

An embodiment of a device for reporting a heart failure status of a patient comprises: a parameter acquisition module configured to acquire at least one trended heart failure parameter; a predetermined event acquisition module configured to acquire at least one predetermined event corresponding to the at least one trended heart failure parameter, wherein each of the at least one predetermined event represents an event condition where a predetermined event definition is satisfied; an alert acquisition module configured to acquire at least one heart failure status alert associated with the at least one predetermined event, wherein each of the at least one alert represents an alert condition where a predetermined alert definition is satisfied; and an output communication module configured to communicate the at least one heart failure status alert.

Claims

1. A system for reporting a heart failure status of a patient, the system including processing circuitry configured to operate on computer-readable instructions to perform a computer-executable process, the process comprising:

acquiring one or more trended heart failure parameters;

detecting one or more predetermined events corresponding to the one or more trended heart failure parameters;

generating one or more heart failure status alerts corresponding to the one or more predetermined events;

communicating the one or more heart failure status alerts, wherein the one or more trended heart failure parameters includes at least one of the group consisting of;

trended respiration rate, trended respiration tidal volume, trended activity, trended posture, trended dyspnea, trended heart rate, trended tidal volume to respiration rate parameter, trended heart rate to minute ventilation parameter, trended heart rate to work rate parameter, ventilatory response to work rate parameter, trended percent AF, trended body weight, trended LV end diastolic pressure, trended orthopnea, trended peripheral edema, trended pulmonary edema, trended heart sounds, and trended thoracic impedance;

classifying one or more of the trended heart failure parameters as relevant to the one or more heart failure status alerts; and

displaying, in a display area, the one or more identified relevant trended heart failure parameters with a characterization of relevance.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the computer-executable process further comprises:

detecting the one or more predetermined events using the one or more trended heart failure parameters; and

generating the one or more heart failure status alerts based on the one or more predetermined events.

3. The system of claim 1 further comprising a display having a display area, wherein the computer-executable process further comprises:

communicating at least one of a trended heart failure parameter, a predetermined event, or a heart failure status alert in a manner suitable for use in determining the heart failure status of the patient; and

displaying the communicated heart failure parameter, predetermined event, or heart failure status alert in the display area.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein communicating the one or more heart failure status alerts further comprises:

automatically displaying a report, automatically triggering an alarm, automatically sending an e-mail, automatically sending a telefax, or automatically placing a telephone call.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein each of the one or more predetermined event represents an event condition in which a predetermined event definition is satisfied for at least one of the trended heart failure parameters.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the predetermined event definition includes a comparison of present values to previous values for the trended heart failure parameters.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein each of the one or more heart failure status alerts represents an alert condition in which a predetermined alert definition is satisfied.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the system includes a programmable implantable medical device (IMD) adapted to acquire the one or more trended heart failure parameters and adapted to communicate with a programmer adapted to display the one or more heart failure status alerts.

9. The system of claim 1, wherein the system includes a wellness management device (WMD) adapted to display the one or more heart failure status alerts in a manner suitable for viewing by a clinician or in a manner suitable for viewing by the patient.

10. A programmable device comprising processing circuitry configured to operate on instructions stored in a memory to perform a computer-executable process to report a heart failure status of a patient, the process comprising:

acquiring one or more trended heart failure parameters;

receiving notification of one or more predetermined events corresponding to the one or more trended heart failure parameters; and

communicating one or more heart failure status alerts based on the one or more predetermined events, wherein the one or more trended heart failure parameters includes at least one of the group consisting of;

trended respiration rate, trended respiration tidal volume, trended activity, trended posture, trended dyspnea, trended heart rate, trended tidal volume to respiration rate parameter, trended heart rate to minute ventilation parameter, trended heart rate to work rate parameter, ventilatory response to work rate parameter, trended percent AF, trended body weight, trended LV end diastolic pressure, trended orthopnea, trended peripheral edema, trended pulmonary edema, trended heart sounds, and trended thoracic impedance; and

classifying one or more of the trended heart failure parameters as relevant to the one or more heart failure status alerts; and

displaying, in a display area, the one or more identified relevant trended heart failure parameters, predetermined events, and alerts with a characterization of relevance.

11. The device of claim 10, wherein the computer-executable process further comprises:

detecting the one or more predetermined events using the one or more trended heart failure parameters; and

generating the one or more heart failure status alerts based on the one or more predetermined events.

The device of claim 10 further comprising a display with a display area, wherein the computer-executable process further comprises filtering the one or more trended heart failure parameters, the one or more predetermined events, and the one or more heart failure status alerts according to relevance to identify a relevant one or more trended heart failure parameters, a relevant one or more predetermined events, and a relevant one or more alerts, and comprises displaying in the display area at least one in the group consisting of:

the relevant one or more trended heart failure parameters, the relevant one or more predetermined events, and the relevant one or more heart failure status alerts.

The device of claim 10 wherein each of the one or more predetermined events represents an event condition in which a predetermined event definition is satisfied for at least one of the trended heart failure parameters and the predetermined event definition includes a comparison of present values to previous values for the trended heart failure parameters.

14. The device of claim 10 wherein the communicated one or more heart failure status alerts includes an alert of worsened heart failure, an alert of worsening heart failure, an alert of future worsening heart failure, or an alert of acute heart failure decompensation.

15. The device of claim 10, wherein each of the one or more predetermined events represents an event condition in which a predetermined event definition is satisfied for at least one of the trended heart failure parameters;

wherein each of the one or more heart failure status alerts represents a heart failure alert condition in which a predetermined heart failure alert definition is satisfied; and

wherein at least one of the predetermined event definition and predetermined heart failure alert definition includes a weighted probability.

16. A device for reporting a heart failure status of a patient, the device comprising:

a parameter acquisition module configured to acquire at least one trended heart failure parameter;

a predetermined event detection module configured to detect at least one predetermined event corresponding to the at least one trended heart failure parameter;

an action trigger module configured to generate at least one heart failure status alert associated with the at least one predetermined event;

an output communication module configured to communicate the at least one heart failure status alert; and

a filter module adapted to communicate with the output communication module and to classify the at least one trended heart failure parameter as relevant to the at least one heart failure status alert according to relevance such that the output communication module communicates higher priority parameters in a preferred manner over lower priority parameters.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein the output communication module is further configured to communicate the at least one trended heart failure parameter in a manner suitable for use in determining the heart failure status of the patient.

The device of claim 16, wherein each of the at least one predetermined events represents an event condition in which a predetermined event definition is satisfied for at least one of the trended heart failure parameters, and wherein the event condition is where a predetermined event definition is satisfied for apnea, activity, respiration rate, posture, percent AF, or weight.

19. The device of claim 18, wherein the predetermined event definition includes a comparison of present values to previous values for the trended heart failure parameters.

20. The device of claim 16, wherein the at least one heart failure status alert initiates an alert to a clinician of worsened heart failure, an alert of worsening heart failure, an alert of future worsening heart failure, or an alert of acute heart failure decompensation.
