1. A method for displaying social network-defined video events, the method comprising:
- receiving information regarding a plurality of video content files over a communication network at a client device, wherein each of the plurality of video content files is different from a main video content file on display at the client device;
generating metrics for at least one of the plurality of video content files, the generated metrics regarding one or more characteristics that define one or more predetermined event types, wherein the generated metrics are based on social media feedback specific to one or more points within the at least one video content file;
identifying that the generated metrics for one or more of the points within the at least one video content file satisfy a set of the characteristics that define one of the predetermined event types;
defining an event within the at least one video content file, the defined event corresponding to the predetermined event type defined by the satisfied set of the characteristics, wherein a start point for the defined event is determined based on the generated metrics specific to at least one of the identified points indicating a change in interest level;
receiving a request from the client device for a display of the defined event within the at least one video content file; and
generating the display of the defined event within the at least one video content file, wherein generating the display of the defined event within the at least one video content file comprises skipping a video portion prior to the determined start point of the defined event within the at least one video content file, and wherein the defined event within the at least one video content file is displayed at the client device on a same screen as the main video content file.

Abstract
Systems and methods are herein disclosed for displaying a smart preview of video content. A first claimed embodiment includes receiving video content. A system can then detect an event taking place during the video content having an event time. The system can then receive a request to display a preview of the video content. The system can then display the preview of the video content beginning at the event time.

8. A system for displaying social network-defined video events, the system comprising:
-
a communication interface that receives information regarding a plurality of video content files over a communication network, wherein each of the plurality of video content files is different from a main video content file that is on display at a client device; and a processor that executes instructions stored in memory, wherein execution of the instructions by the processor; generates metrics for at least one of the plurality of video content files, the generated metrics regarding one or more characteristics that define one or more predetermined event types, wherein the generated metrics are based on social media feedback specific to one or more points within the at least one video content file, identifies that the generated metrics for one or more of the points within the at least one video content file satisfy a set of the characteristics that define one of the predetermined event types, and defines an event within the at least one video content file, the defined event corresponding to the predetermined event type defined by the satisfied set of the characteristics, wherein a start point for the defined event is determined based on the generated metrics specific to at least one of the identified points indicating a change in interest level, wherein the communication interface receives a request from the client device for a display of the defined event within the at least one video content file; and generates a display of the defined event within the at least one video content file by skipping a video portion prior to the determined start point of the defined event within the at least one video content file, wherein the defined event of the at least one video content file is displayed at the client device on a same screen as the main video content file. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13)
