Bone plate system and method
First Claim
1. A bone plate system for stabilizing bone portions, the bone plate system comprising:
- a plurality of bone screws;
a bone plate having a longitudinal axis;
a cable adapted to be looped around the bone portions and connected to the bone plate;
body portions of the bone plate that are laterally spaced from each other for contacting the bone portions;
throughbores of the body portions for receiving the bone screws;
a cylindrical, straight tubular member of the bone plate that interconnects the bone plate body portions and extends straight laterally therebetween, the tubular member resisting relative movement of the bone plate body portions;
tool-receiving through openings of the bone plate at opposite sides of the tubular member;
a cylindrical outer surface of the tubular member that extends along the tool-receiving through openings for being engaged by a tool positioned in the tool-receiving openings, the cylindrical outer surface having an outer diameter that is uniform throughout the tubular member;
a through aperture of the tubular member extending laterally therethrough and sized to receive the cable to allow the cable to be looped around the bone portions and advanced through the tubular member; and
exposed arcuate crimp portions of the tubular member each including a portion of the cylindrical outer surface, the exposed arcuate crimp portions being across the through aperture from one another and defining a portion of the through aperture therebetween, the arcuate crimp portions being configured to be deformed toward each other to fix the cable to the bone plate, each one of the arcuate crimp portions extending along a different one of the tool-receiving through openings.

Abstract
A bone plate system for securing a plurality of bones is provided including a plate member, a locking device of the bone plate, and a surgical cable having a trailing end for being connected to the bone plate and a leading end for being advanced around the bones and into the locking device. The surgical cable may be tensioned to approximate the bones, urge the bones together, and seat the bone plate against the bones. The locking device may be reconfigured to a locked configuration to fix the bone plate to the surgical cable. The bone plate further includes a plurality of throughbores for receiving bone anchors that rigidly fix the bone plate to the bones. The bone plate system utilizes the tensile strength of the surgical cable and the rigid fixation between the bone anchors and the bone plate to resist relative movement of the bones.

12. A bone plate system for stabilizing bone portions, the bone plate system comprising:
-
a plurality of bone screws; a bone plate having upper and lower surfaces for contacting the bone portions; throughbores of the bone plate extending between the upper and lower surfaces and configured to receive the bone screws with either the bone plate upper surface or the bone plate lower surface contacting the bone portions; a cable having a leading end portion adapted to be looped around the one or more bone portions and having a trailing end portion for being secured to the bone plate; a first longitudinal portion and a second longitudinal portion of the bone plate that are laterally spaced from each other, the first and second longitudinal portions each having an exposed laterally inner surface and an exposed laterally outer surface; a deformable member of the bone plate connecting the first and second longitudinal portions and extending transversely thereto, the deformable member having a through aperture sized to receive the cable; the deformable member having an unlocked configuration that permits the cable to be shifted in the through aperture relative to the bone plate and a locked configuration which fixes the cable to the bone plate; a through opening of the bone plate first longitudinal portion adjacent the deformable member and extending between the laterally inner and outer surfaces of the first longitudinal portion, the through opening being configured to permit the leading end portion of the cable to be advanced through the through opening in a lateral direction from the laterally inner surface to the laterally outer surface of the first longitudinal portion; and a stop surface of the through opening configured to engage the cable trailing end portion and resist the cable trailing end portion from being advanced through the through opening in the lateral direction from the laterally inner surface to the laterally outer surface of the first longitudinal portion and secure the cable trailing end portion to the first bone plate longitudinal portion adjacent the deformable member. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21)
