1. A model train control system comprising:
- a remote control comprising;
a housing;
a touch-screen display coupled to said housing for permitting user control over various train features and for displaying train information;
a first memory device for storing said train information;
a first processor disposed within said housing and being operatively coupled to said touch-screen display and said first memory device, said first processor configured to transmit commands in response to user interactions with icons on said touch-screen display; and
a first transceiver configured to communicate said commands via a wireless protocol; and
a programmable model train module configured to transmit signals to a model train for controlling features of a model train, comprising;
a second memory device for storing at least a program;
a second transceiver configured to receive said commands from said first transceiver via said wireless protocol; and
a second processor operatively coupled to said second transceiver and said second memory device;
said second processor configured to use said program to control said features of said model train by converting said commands into said signals, said signals being recognizable by said model train;
wherein said first processor is configured to download a remote control application and at least one update to said program from at least one server via the Internet, to store said remote control application in said first memory device, and provide said update to said model train module via said first transceiver, said program being stored in said second memory device, said remote control application transmitting said commands to said programmable model train, and said programmable model train module using said program to convert said commands received from said remote control into said signals recognizable by said model train, said model train using said signals to control at least lights and a motor on said model train;
wherein said remote control application is programmable, allowing a user to configure said icons for at least different light settings, a first one of said icons being configured for a first light setting, said first light setting being selected from a plurality of light settings, and a second one of said icons being configured for a second light setting, said second light setting being selected from said plurality of light settings;
wherein a first one of said commands corresponds to said first light setting, a second one of said commands corresponds to said second light setting, and said first and second ones of said commands are distinguishable from commands corresponding to non-selected ones of said plurality of light settings.

Abstract
A model train control system providing a more realistic modeling of the movement, sound, smoke, and lighting effects of a model train is disclosed. A number of dynamic inputs are used to control such effects. Novel features include providing a dynamic variable speed compensator, a dynamic engine load calculator, automatic dynamic momentum, an adjustable train brake, spectrum control, a velocity controller, pressure sensitive effects, a voice activated dispatcher system, a train location and information reporter network, two digit addressing, a traffic control system, accessory control, a model train Central Control Module, and removable memory modules.

10. A method for controlling a model train, comprising:

downloading by a first processor data from a server via the Internet, said data comprising an application configured to control said model train via commands and updates to a program for performing actions in response to said at least one command; storing said application in a first memory device; sending by said first processor said updates to said program to a programmable model train module via a wireless protocol, said programmable module train module being configured to transmit signals to said model train for controlling features of said model train, said program being stored on a second memory device in said programmable model train module; receiving user interactions with said application via a touch-screen display to at least configure said application by selecting a first light setting for a first icon and a second light setting for a second icon, said first and second light settings being selected from a plurality of light settings; sending by said first processor first and second ones of said commands to said programmable model train module via said wireless protocol in response to said user interaction with said first and second icons, respectively, said first one of said command being distinguishable from said second one of said command and said first and second ones of said commands being distinguishable from commands corresponding to non-selected ones of said plurality of light settings; and using by a second processor in said programmable model train module at least a portion of said program to control a plurality of light features of said model train by converting said first one of said commands into at least a first one of said signals and a second one of said commands into at least a second one of said signals. - View Dependent Claims (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17)

18. A model train control system comprising:

a remote control comprising; a housing; a touch-screen display coupled to said housing for permitting user control over train features and for displaying train information; a first memory device for storing said train information; a first processor disposed within said housing and being operatively coupled to said touch-screen display and said first memory device, said first processor configured to generate commands to be transmitted in response to user interactions with said touch-screen display; and at least one transceiver configured to communicate said commands via a wireless protocol; and a model train module in communication with a model train, said programmable model train module comprising a second processor configured to convert said commands into signals that are provided to said model train to control features of said model train including at least lights, speed and direction of said model train; wherein said first processor is configured to download a remote control application from at least one server via the Internet, said remote control application being used by said first processor to provide said commands from said remote control to said model train module; wherein said remote control application is programmable by a user, allowing said user to configure a first icon for a first light setting and a second icon for a second light setting, said first and second light settings being selected from a plurality of light settings; wherein a first one of said commands corresponding to said first light setting, a second one of said commands corresponding to said second light setting, and said first and second ones of said commands are distinguishable from commands corresponding to non-selected ones of said plurality of light settings. - View Dependent Claims (19, 20)
