Abstract

A sound enrichment system for provision of tinnitus relief, the sound enrichment system includes a noise generator, at least one signal modulator for random or pseudo-random modulation of a noise signal that is obtained using the noise generator, and an output transducer for conversion of the modulated noise signal to an acoustic signal for presentation to a user. A method of providing a noise enriched sound signal for provision of relief of tinnitus includes generating a randomly or pseudo-randomly modulated noise signal, generating an acoustic noise signal using the modulated noise signal, and presenting the acoustic noise signal to a tinnitus suffering person.

Claims

1. A sound enrichment system for tinnitus relief, comprising:

a noise generator configured to generate a noise signal;

at least one signal modulator configured to at least one of randomly or pseudo-randomly modulate the noise signal to generate a modulated noise signal; and

an output configured to convert the modulated noise signal for presentation to a user.

2. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the output comprises a transducer, and wherein the transducer is configured to convert the modulated noise signal to an acoustic signal and is configured to present the acoustic signal to the user.

3. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the at least one signal modulator and the noise generator collectively comprise a single unit configured to generate the modulated noise signal.

The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the sound enrichment system is part of a signal processor of an auditory device, and wherein the signal processor further comprises a hearing impairment compensation block configured to process an input signal according to a hearing impairment compensation algorithm and to generate a hearing impairment corrected output signal that is provided to the output.

The sound enrichment system of claim 4, wherein the sound enrichment system is configured to inject the modulated noise signal before the output such that the output is configured to convert both of the modulated noise signal and the hearing impairment corrected output signal for presentation to the user.

6. The sound enrichment system of claim 5, wherein the sound enrichment system is configured to add the modulated noise signal to the hearing impairment corrected output signal.

7. The sound enrichment system of claim 5, further comprising:

an environment classifier configured to generate an environmental classification of the input signal; and

a switch configured to selectively connect an output of the at least one signal modulator to between the hearing impairment compensation block and the output in dependence of the environmental classification of the input signal by the environment classifier.

8. The sound enrichment system of claim 4, wherein the sound enrichment system is configured to analyze a spectrum of the input signal to determine a frequency range for the noise generator.

9. The sound enrichment system of claim 8, wherein the noise generator operates at a subset of frequencies of the input signal.

10. The sound enrichment system of claim 9, wherein the noise generator operates at a subset of frequencies of the input signal via use of at least one of a low pass filter and a high pass filter.

11. The sound enrichment system of claim 8, wherein the frequency range for the noise generator is adjustable.

12. The sound enrichment system of claim 4, further comprising:

an environment classifier configured to generate an environmental classification of the input signal,

wherein the noise generator and the at least one signal modulator are activated based on the environmental classification generated by the environment classifier.

The sound enrichment system of claim 1, further comprising a spectral shaping filter configured to filter the noise signal, wherein the at least one signal modulator is configured to modulate one or more selected spectral characteristics of the noise signal by modulating a frequency response of the spectral shaping filter.

The sound enrichment system of claim 13, wherein a modulation of the frequency response of the spectral shaping filter comprises a modulation of at least one parameter selected from the group consisting of a stop-band frequency, a slope, number of poles and zeroes, and location of poles and zeroes.

15. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, further comprising:

a hearing impairment compensation block configured to convert a sound signal into an output signal for compensation of a hearing loss of the user; and

wherein the modulated noise signal is inserted between the hearing impairment compensation block and the output such that the output converts both of the modulated noise signal and the output signal for presentation to the user.

16. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, further comprising:

a hearing block configured to convert a sound signal into a first output signal; and

an environment classifier configured to generate an environmental classification of the sound signal,

wherein the at least one signal modulator is configured to modulate the noise signal based on the environmental classification, and wherein the output is configured to convert both of the first output signal and the modulated noise signal for presentation to the user.

17. The sound enrichment system of claim 16, wherein the hearing block is a hearing compensation block, and wherein the first output signal is configured for compensation of a hearing loss of the user.

18. The sound enrichment system of claim 16, wherein to generate the modulated noise signal based on the environmental classification, the at least one signal modulator is configured to:

initiate generation of the modulated noise signal based on the environmental classification of an ambient sound environment of the sound enrichment system.

19. The sound enrichment system of claim 16, wherein the environmental classifier is configured to determine a type of noise present in the sound signal, and wherein the at least one signal modulator is configured to modulate the noise signal based on the type of noise present in the sound signal.

The sound enrichment system of claim 16, wherein the environmental classifier is configured to determine whether or not speech is present in the sound signal, and wherein the at least one signal modulator is configured to modulate the noise signal based at least in part on whether or not speech is present in the sound signal.

21. The sound enrichment system of claim 16, wherein the at least one signal modulator is configured to adjust a level of the modulated noise signal based on the environmental classification.

22. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the noise generator is configured to generate the noise signal using frequency weighting of noise.

23. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the noise generator is configured to generate a white noise signal.

24. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, wherein the signal modulator is configured to modulate one or more selected spectral characteristics of the noise signal at a rate that is slower than a rate of variation of the one or more selected spectral characteristics of the noise signal.

25. The sound enrichment system of claim 1, further comprising:

an input device configured to detect ambient sounds;

an environment classifier configured to generate an environmental classification of the ambient sounds,

wherein the at least one signal modulator is configured to modulate the noise signal in dependence of the environmental classification of the ambient sounds by the environment classifier.

26. The sound enrichment system of claim 25, wherein modulation of the noise signal is performed in dependence of what kind of noise is already present in the ambient sounds.
