1. A first playback device, wherein the first playback device comprises:

  • at least one battery;

    a charging interface;

    a network interface;

    one or more processors;

    tangible, non-transitory computer-readable memory comprising program instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the first playback device to perform functions comprising;

    determining that (i) the at least one battery is coupled to an external power source via the charging interface and (ii) the at least one battery has a battery level that is above a predetermined threshold;

    after the determining, operating as a group coordinator of a synchrony group so long as the battery level of the at least one battery remains above the predetermined threshold while coupled to the external power source, wherein the group coordinator is configured to (i) receive a command via the network interface, (ii) in response to the command, transmit audio content and audio content playback timing information to each other member of the synchrony group, and (iii) engage in synchronous playback of the audio content with each other member of the synchrony group;

    deselecting the first playback device as the group coordinator, wherein deselecting comprises detecting that the at least one battery has been decoupled from the external power source; and

    in response to the detecting, (i) determining that a second playback device is coupled to an external power source and (ii) causing the second playback device to become the group coordinator in response to determining that the second playback device is coupled to an external power source, wherein causing the second playback device to become the group coordinator comprises transitioning the group coordinator from the first playback device to the second playback device while maintaining synchronous playback of the audio content in the synchrony group.
