Abstract

A system and method for generating traffic reports is described. The system receives a set of inputs specifying at least a geographical region, a first period of time, and a second period of time. The system then identifies one or more streets within at least a threshold proximity of the specified geographical region and aggregates traffic information for the one or more streets over the first period of time and the second period of time, respectively. Further, the system generates a traffic report for the geographical region based at least in part on a comparison of the aggregated traffic information for the first period of time with the aggregated traffic information for the second period of time.

Claims

1. A network computer system for generating a traffic report, the network computer system comprising:

a memory that stores instructions; and

one or more processors that execute the instructions stored in the memory to;

obtain sensor information from a plurality of mobile computing devices, each of the plurality of mobile computing devices being carried within a corresponding vehicle that operates in a given geographic region;

determine a first aggregation of sensor information that includes sensor information obtained from a first set of the plurality of computing devices over a first period of time;

determine a second aggregation of sensor information that includes sensor information obtained from a second set of mobile computing devices over a second period of time; and

provide a user interface that indicates a safety level of one or more road segments in the given geographic region based at least in part on determining, based on analyzing the first aggregation of sensor information and the second aggregation of sensor information, acceleration information of vehicles traveling on the one or more road segments during the first period of time and the second period of time.

2. The network computer system of claim 1, wherein the user interface further indicates a graphical comparison of the safety level of the one or road segments before and after a construction project.

3. The network computer system of claim 1, wherein the user interface further includes a graphical comparison of an average vehicle speed or acceleration level for the one or more road segments before and after a construction project.

4. The network computer system of claim 1, wherein the user interface further displays a variance in at least one of an average vehicle speed or the safety level of the one or more road segments between a start and an end period of time.

5. The network computer system of claim 1, wherein the user interface includes a geographical input feature and a time input feature.

6. The network computer system of claim 5, wherein the geographical input feature includes an interactive map on which a user selects a geographical region for which to generate a corresponding traffic report that indicates a corresponding safety level.

7. The network computer system of claim 5, wherein the time input feature allows thea user to specify at least two instances of time or at least two time ranges to generate corresponding traffic reports that indicate corresponding safety levels.

8. The network computer system of claim 7, wherein a first of the at least two time ranges is a period before a construction project and a second of the at least two time ranges is a period after the construction project.

The network computer system of claim 1, wherein the user interface differentiates a first number of road segments of the one or more road segments that experienced an overall increase in at least one of an average speed or the safety level from a second number of road segments of the one or more road segments that experienced an overall decrease in the one of an average speed and the safety level.

10. The network computer system of claim 1, wherein the sensor information includes at least one of a position, a speed, or an acceleration information of the respective vehicle at corresponding instances of time.

11. A method of generating a traffic report in a network computer system, the network computer system including one or more processors and a memory, the memory storing instructions executable in the one or more processors to:

obtain sensor information from a plurality of mobile computing devices, each of the plurality of mobile computing devices being carried within a corresponding vehicle that operates in a given geographic region;

determine a first aggregation of sensor information that includes sensor information obtained from a first set of the plurality of computing devices over a first period of time;

determine a second aggregation of sensor information that includes sensor information obtained from a second set of mobile computing devices over a second period of time; and

provide a user interface that indicates a safety level of one or more road segments in the given geographic region based at least in part on determining, based on analyzing the first aggregation of sensor information and the second aggregation of sensor information, acceleration information of vehicles traveling on the one or more road segments during the first period of time and the second period of time.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the user interface further indicates a graphical comparison of the safety level of the one or more road segments before and after a construction project.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein the user interface further includes a graphical comparison of an average vehicle speed for the one or more road segments before and after a construction project.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein the user interface further displays a variance in at least one of an average vehicle speed or the safety level of the one or more selected road segments between a start and an end period of time.

15. The method of claim 11 wherein the user interface includes a geographical input feature and a time input feature.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the geographical input feature includes an interactive map on which a user selects a geographical region for which to generate a corresponding traffic report that indicates a corresponding safety level.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein the time input feature allows a user to specify at least two time ranges to generate corresponding traffic reports that indicate corresponding safety levels.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein a first of the at least two time ranges is a period before a construction project and a second of the at least two time ranges is a period after the construction project.

19. The method of claim 11 wherein the user interface differentiates a first number of road segments of the one or more road segments that experienced an overall increase in at least one of an average speed or the safety level from a second number of road segments of the one or more road segments that experienced an overall decrease in the one of an average speed or the safety level.

20. The method of claim 11 wherein the sensor information includes at least one of a position, a speed or an acceleration information of the respective vehicle at corresponding instances of time.
