Abstract

A device can include a first display configured to produce an image and a second display. The second display can be non-emissive and transparent. The second display can also include a plurality of pixels that is electronically controllable to selectively diffuse light associated with the image produced by the first display.

Claims

1. A device, comprising:

a first display configured to produce an image;

a second display, wherein the second display is non-emissive and transparent and includes a plurality of pixels that is electronically controllable to selectively diffuse light associated with the image produced by the first display; and

a spacer between the first display and the second display, wherein the spacer is adjustable to vary a distance between the first display and the second display to adjust an amount of scattering, produced by the second display, of the image from the first display.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the first display is an emissive display.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein:

the emissive display is a liquid-crystal display, a light-emitting diode display, a light enhanced layer, or an organic light-emitting diode display; and

the second display is a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal display, an electrochromic display, an electro-dispersive display, a polymer stabilized liquid crystal display, an electrowetting display, or a liquid crystal display including Smectic A liquid crystals.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the second display includes at least one pixel of the plurality of pixels that includes dye.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein a region of the image produced by the first display is superposed with a region of the second display, and wherein selected pixels of the plurality of pixels in the region of the second display are configured to diffuse light.

6. The device of claim 5, wherein the region of the image appears white.

7. The device of claim 5, further comprising:

a processor configured to perform image processing on the image to detect the region of the image and control the selected pixels of the plurality of pixels of the second display.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable to selectively diffuse light produced by the first display to generate a visual effect applied to the image.

9. The device of claim 8, wherein the visual effect is vignetting, speed, motion, depth, a highlight layer, a privacy filter, a transition, a frame, censorship, block, or texturing.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable to selectively diffuse the light produced by the first display to increase contrast of the image.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein the second display is configured to scatter the light or enhance the image.

12. The device of claim 1, further comprising:

a sensor configured to generate sensor information, wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable based, at least in part, upon the sensor information.

13. The device of claim 12, wherein the sensor is configured to detect ambient light, wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable, at least in part, to increase contrast of the image based upon a detected level of the ambient light.

14. The device of claim 12, wherein the sensor is configured to detect an attribute of a user, wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable based, at least in part, upon the attribute of the user.

15. A method, comprising:

providing a first display configured to produce an image;

providing a second display, wherein the second display is non-emissive and transparent and includes a plurality of pixels that is electronically controllable to selectively diffuse light associated with the image produced by the first display; and

providing a spacer between the first display and the second display, wherein the spacer is adjustable to vary a distance between the first display and the second display to adjust an amount of scattering, produced by the second display, of the image from the first display.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the first display is an emissive display.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein:

the emissive display is a liquid-crystal display, a light-emitting diode display, a light enhanced layer, or an organic light-emitting diode display; and

the second display is a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal display, an electrochromic display, an electro-dispersive display, a polymer stabilized liquid crystal display, an electrowetting display, or a liquid crystal display including Smectic A liquid crystals.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the second display includes at least one pixel of the plurality of pixels that includes dye.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein a region of the image produced by the first display is superposed with a region of the second display wherein selected pixels of the plurality of pixels in the region of the second display are configured to diffuse light.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the region of the image appears white.

21. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

providing a processor configured to perform image processing on the image to detect the region of the image and control the selected pixels of the plurality of pixels of the second display.

22. The method of claim 15, wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable to selectively diffuse light produced by the first display to generate a visual effect applied to the image.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the visual effect is vignetting, speed, motion, depth, a highlight layer, a privacy filter, a transition, a frame, censorship, block, or texturing.

24. The method of claim 15, wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable to selectively diffuse light produced by the first display to increase contrast of the image.

25. The method of claim 15, wherein the second display is configured to scatter the light or enhance the image.

26. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

providing a sensor configured to generate sensor information, wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable based, at least in part, upon the sensor information.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the sensor is configured to detect ambient light, wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable, at least in part, to increase contrast of the image based upon a detected level of the ambient light.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein the sensor is configured to detect an attribute of a user, wherein the plurality of pixels is electronically controllable based, at least in part, upon the attribute of the user.

29. A method comprising:

producing an image on a first display;

selectively diffusing light associated with the image produced by the first display using a plurality of electronically controllable pixels of a second display, wherein the second display is non-emissive and transparent; and

adjusting an amount of scattering, produced by the second display, of the image from the first display by varying a distance between the first display and the second display.

30. The method of claim 29, further comprising:

determining, using a processor configured to perform image processing on the image, selected pixels of the plurality of electronically controllable pixels to adjust to diffuse the light.

31. The method of claim 29, further comprising:

controlling selected pixels of the plurality of electronically controllable pixels to selectively diffuse the light to generate a visual effect applied to the image.

32. The method of claim 29, further comprising:

controlling selected pixels of the plurality of electronically controllable pixels to selectively diffuse the light to increase contrast of the image.

33. The method of claim 29, further comprising:

generating sensor information using a sensor; and

controlling selected pixels of the plurality of electronically controllable pixels based, at least in part, upon the sensor information.

34. The method of claim 33, wherein the sensor is configured to detect ambient light, wherein the selected pixels of the plurality of electronically controllable pixels are electronically controllable, at least in part, to increase contrast of the image based upon a detected level of the ambient light.

35. The method of claim 33, wherein the sensor is configured to detect an attribute of a user, wherein the selected pixels of the plurality of electronically controllable pixels are electronically controllable based, at least in part, upon the attribute of the user.
