Abstract

In a general aspect, motion is detected using wireless signals. In one example, beamforming dynamic information is obtained based on a set of wireless signals transmitted through a space from a first wireless communication device to a second wireless communication device. Motion of an object in the space is detected based on the beamforming dynamic information.

Claims

1. A motion detection method, comprising:

obtaining beamforming dynamic information based on a set of wireless signals transmitted through a space from a first wireless communication device to a second wireless communication device; and

detecting, by operation of one or more processors, motion of an object in the space by analyzing changes in the beamforming dynamic information over time;

wherein analyzing changes in the beamforming dynamic information over time comprises;

generating spatial maps based on the beamforming dynamic information, and

analyzing changes in the spatial maps over time.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the spatial maps represent relative intensity of the wireless signals received by the second wireless device as a function of direction.

The method of claim 1, wherein the first wireless communication device comprises a plurality of transmit antennas, the second wireless communication device comprises plurality of receive antennas in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, the spatial maps are associated with respective modes, and the modes correspond to communication between respective pairs of the transmit antennas and receive antennas.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the beamforming dynamic information comprises feedback matrices for each respective wireless signal in the set of wireless signals, each feedback matrix generated by the second wireless communication device.

The method of claim 1, wherein the beamforming dynamic information comprises steering matrices associated with each respective wireless signal in the set of wireless signals, each steering matrix generated by the first wireless communication device based on feedback received from the second wireless communication device.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein the second wireless communication device generates the feedback matrices in a channel sounding process executed with the first wireless communication device.

7. The method of claim 4, wherein each of the feedback matrices is one of:

an H-matrix representing a channel response matrix of dimensions N_RX×

N_TX for each sub-carrier frequency k, N_RX being a number of antennas at a receiver, N_Rx being a number of antennas at a transmitter;

an uncompressed V-matrix based on a transformation of an H-matrix;

or

a compressed V-matrix based on a transformation of an H-matrix.

8. The method of claim 1, comprising detecting, by operation of the one or more processors, a location of the object in the space based on the beamforming dynamic information.

9. A device comprising:

a processor; and

a memory comprising instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the wireless communication device to perform operations comprising;

obtaining beamforming dynamic information based on a set of wireless signals transmitted through a space from a first wireless communication device to a second wireless communication device; and

detecting motion of an object in the space by-analyzing changes in the beamforming dynamic information over time;

wherein analyzing changes over time in the beamforming dynamic information comprises;

generating spatial maps based on the beamforming dynamic information, and

analyzing changes in the spatial maps over time.

10. The device of claim 9, wherein the spatial maps represent relative intensity of the wireless signals received by the second wireless device as a function of direction.

The device of claim 9, wherein the first wireless communication device comprises a plurality of transmit antennas and the second wireless communication device comprises plurality of receive antennas in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration, the spatial maps are associated with respective modes, and the modes correspond to communication between respective pairs of the transmit antennas and receive antennas in the MIMO configuration.

12. The device of claim 9, wherein the beamforming dynamic information comprises feedback matrices for each respective wireless signal in the set of wireless signals, each feedback matrix generated by the second wireless communication device.

The device of claim 9, wherein the beamforming dynamic information comprises steering matrices associated with each respective wireless signal in the set of wireless signals, each steering matrix generated by the first wireless communication device based on feedback received from the second wireless communication device.

14. The device of claim 12, wherein the second wireless communication device generates the feedback matrices in a channel sounding process executed with the first wireless communication device.

15. The device of claim 12, wherein each of the feedback matrices is one of:

an H-matrix representing a channel response matrix of dimensions N_RX×

N_TX for each sub-carrier frequency k, N_RX being a number of antennas at a receiver, N_RX being a number of antennas at a transmitter;

an uncompressed V-matrix based on a transformation of an H-matrix;

or

a compressed V-matrix based on a transformation of an H-matrix.

16. The device of claim 9, the operations comprising detecting, by operation of the one or more processors, a location of the object in the space based on the beamforming dynamic information.

17. The device of claim 9, wherein the memory and the processor are components of the first wireless communication device.

18. The device of claim 9, wherein the memory and the processor are components of the second wireless communication device.

19. A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising instructions that, when executed by data processing apparatus, perform operation comprising:

obtaining beamforming dynamic information based on a set of wireless signals transmitted through a space from a first wireless communication device to a second wireless communication device; and

detecting motion of an object in the space by analyzing changes over time in the beamforming dynamic information;

wherein analyzing changes over time in the beamforming dynamic information comprises;

generating spatial maps based on the beamforming dynamic information, and

analyzing changes in the spatial maps over time.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 19 wherein the spatial maps represent relative intensity of the wireless signals received by the second wireless device as a function of direction.

The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the first wireless communication device comprises a plurality of transmit antennas, the second wireless communication device comprises plurality of receive antennas in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration, the spatial maps are associated with respective modes, and the modes correspond to communication between respective pairs of the transmit antennas and receive antennas.

22. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the beamforming dynamic information comprises feedback matrices for each respective wireless signal in the set of wireless signals, each feedback matrix generated by the second wireless communication device.

23. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the beamforming dynamic information comprises steering matrices associated with each respective wireless signal in the set of wireless signals, each steering matrix generated by the first wireless communication device based on feedback received from the second wireless communication device.

24. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, comprising detecting, by operation of the one or more processors, a location of the object in the space based on the beamforming dynamic information.
