Abstract

An image display device includes an image forming device, collimating optical system, and optical device, with the optical device including a light guide plate, first diffraction grating member and second diffraction grating member which are made up of a volume hologram diffraction grating, and with central light emitted from the pixel of the center of the image forming device and passed through the center of the collimating optical system being input to the light guide plate from the near side of the second diffraction grating member with a certain angle. Thus, the image display device capable of preventing occurrence of color irregularities, despite the simple configuration, can be provided.

Claims

1. A head mounted display device comprising:

a first image display device for a first eye, the first image display device including a first image forming device and a first optical device, the first optical device including

a first light guide plate having opposed front and rear surfaces and extending lengthwise along a first direction,

a first diffractive optical member of the first optical device for reflecting light input to the first light guide plate and which is disposed on a rear surface of the first light guide plate, and

a second diffractive optical member of the first optical device for reflecting light propagated within the first light guide plate and which is disposed on the rear surface of the first light guide plate; and

a second image display device for a second eye, the second image display device including a second image forming device and a second optical device, the second optical device including

a second light guide plate having opposed front and rear surfaces and extending lengthwise along a second direction that intersects with the first direction,

a third diffractive optical member of the second optical device for reflecting light input to the second light guide plate and which is disposed on a rear surface of the second light guide plate, and

a fourth diffractive optical member of the second optical device for reflecting light propagated within the second light guide plate and which is disposed on the rear surface of the second light guide plate,

wherein the first image forming device is positioned over the front surface of the first light guide plate, and the second image forming device is positioned over the front surface of the second light guide plate,

wherein the first image forming device and the first optical device are parallel to the first direction in a top view, the second image forming device and the second optical device are parallel to the second direction in the top view, a center of the first image forming device tilts from a center line of the first diffractive optical member perpendicular to the first direction, and a center of the second image forming device tilts from a center line of the third diffractive optical member perpendicular to the second direction,

wherein a thickness of the second diffractive optical member is thinner than a thickness of the first diffractive optical member, and

wherein a thickness of the fourth diffractive optical member is thinner than a thickness of the third diffractive optical member.

2. The head mounted display device according to claim 1,

wherein a thickness of the second diffractive optical member is less than 5 μ

m, and a thickness of the first diffractive optical member is equal to or greater than 5 μ

m, and

wherein a thickness of the fourth diffractive optical member is less than 5 μ

m, and a thickness of the third diffractive optical member is equal to or greater than 5 μ

m.

The head mounted display device according to claim 1, wherein the values of the maximum diffraction efficiency of each of the second and fourth diffractive optical members are smaller than the values of the maximum diffraction efficiency of each of the first and third diffractive optical members, respectively.

The head mounted display device according to claim 3, wherein the values of the maximum diffraction efficiency of each of the first and third diffractive optical members are equal to or greater than 50%, and the values of the maximum diffraction efficiency of each of the second and fourth diffractive optical members are less than 50%, respectively.

The head mounted display device according to claim 3, wherein the values of the maximum diffraction efficiency of each of the first and third diffractive optical members are equal to or greater than 90%, and the values of the maximum diffraction efficiency of each of the second and fourth diffractive optical members are less than 30%, respectively.

6. The head mounted display device according to claim 1, wherein each of the first, second, third and fourth diffractive optical members include a volume hologram diffraction grating.

7. The head mounted display device according to claim 6, wherein said volume hologram diffraction gratings are reflection-type volume hologram diffraction gratings.

8. The head mounted display device according to claim 1, wherein the first and second image display devices display different images.

9. The head mounted display device according to claim 1,

wherein for the first image display device:

input light from the first image forming device and output light reflected off the second optical diffractive member are both on a front surface side of the first light guide plate,

a position of a central line of input light from the first image forming device is farther from a center of the first light guide plate in the first direction than a position of contact of the central line of input light on the first optical device, and

a position of a central line of output light reflected off the second diffractive optical member is farther from a center of the first light guide plate in the first direction than a position of the central line of output light at a position of the first eye, such that on the front surface side of the first light guide plate the central line of input light intersects with the central line of output light.

10. The head mounted display device according to claim 1,

wherein for the second image display device:

input light from the second image forming device and output light reflected off the fourth diffractive optical member are both on a front surface side of the second light guide plate,

a position of a central line of input light at the second image forming device is farther from a center of the second light guide plate in the second direction than a position of contact of the central line of input light on the third optical device, and

the reflected central line of input light is transmitted through the second light guide plate in the second direction to reach the fourth diffractive optical member of the second optical device; and

a position of a central line of output light reflected off the fourth diffractive optical member is farther from a center of the second light guide plate in the second direction than a position of the central line of output light at a position of the second eye, the fourth diffractive optical member of the second optical device reflects the transmitted light such that the direction of a central line of output light that is reflected off the fourth diffractive optical member of the second optical device is again reversed in both the second direction and the fourth direction such that on the front surface side of the second light guide plate the central line of input light intersects with the central line of output light.
