1. A washing machine appliance comprising:

  • a cabinet;

    a wash tub positioned within the cabinet and defining a wash chamber for receipt of a load of articles for washing;

    a water control valve for regulating a flow of water from a water supply into the wash chamber; and

    a controller operably coupled to the water control valve, the controller being configured for;

    obtaining a target volume;

    operating a valve to fill the wash tub to the target volume;

    obtaining a tub water level;

    obtaining a fill volume;

    obtaining an underfill limit based at least in part on the fill volume;

    determining that the tub water level is less than the underfill limit;

    obtaining a new fill level based at least in part on the target volume in response to determining that the tub water level is less than the underfill limit; and

    filling the wash tub to the new fill level.
