Abstract

In one embodiment, an electronic device to be worn on a user'"'"'s forearm includes a display and a set of one or more sensors that provide sensor data. In one aspect, a device may detect, using sensor data obtained from a set of sensors, that a first activity state of a user is active. The device may determine, while the first activity state is active, that the sensor data matches a watch check rule associated with the first activity state. Responsive to the detected match, the device may cause a change in visibility of the display.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a display;

a set of sensors configured to generate sensor data;

a set of one or more processors coupled to the display and the set of sensors;

a non-transitory machine-readable storage medium coupled to the set of one or more processors and having stored therein instructions which, when executed by the set of one or more processors, cause the set of one or more processors to;

detect, using the sensor data, that a sleep activity state of a user is active,

activate a sleep watch check rule associated with the sleep activity state responsive to the sleep activity state of the user being active,

detect, using the sensor data, a watch check event that is associated with a first watch check rule that causes a change in visibility of the display,

prevent, while the sleep watch check rule is active, the detection of the watch check event from causing the change in visibility of the display according to the first watch check rule,

detect an enabling event based at least in part on sensor data indicating an occurrence of a plurality of watch check events within a time period or a selection of a manual user input interface of the apparatus, and

deactivate, in response to detecting the enabling event, the sleep watch check rule.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the instructions further include instructions which, when executed by the set of processors, further cause the set of processors to:

cause, in response to the detection of the watch check event while the sleep watch check rule is active, a different change in visibility of the display than the change in visibility according to the first watch check rule.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein:

the change in visibility of the display according the first watch check rule comprises setting an illumination level of the display at a first illumination level, and

the different change in visibility of the display comprises setting the illumination level of the display at a second illumination level that is less than the first illumination level.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein:

the set of sensors includes an ambient light sensor, and

the second illumination level is based on the sensor data generated by the ambient light sensor.

5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein:

the change in visibility of the display according the first watch check rule comprises displaying first content in the display, and

the different change in visibility of the display comprises displaying second content in the display that is at least partially different than the first content.

6. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein:

the change in visibility of the display according the first watch check rule comprises setting a backlight of the display at a first backlight illumination level, and

the different change in visibility of the display comprises setting the backlight of the display at a second backlight illumination level that is different than the first backlight illumination level.

7. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the different change in visibility of the display is based on the sensor data.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein:

the set of sensors includes an ambient light sensor, and

the different change in visibility of the display is based on the sensor data generated by the ambient light sensor.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:

the set of sensors includes a manual user input interface, and

the sensor data for detecting the watch check event includes data generated by the manual user input interface.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the manual user input interface is selected from the group consisting of:

a button, a touch interface, and a tap sensor.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:

the set of sensors includes one or more of;

a motion sensor or a heart rate monitor, and

the sensor data for detecting that the sleep activity state of the user is active includes one or more selected from the group consisting of;

data generated by the heart rate monitor, data generated by the motion sensor, and data generated by the heart rate monitor and the motion sensor.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the motion sensor is selected from the group consisting of:

an accelerometer, a pedometer, a gyroscope, and combinations of two or more thereof.

13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the instructions further include instructions which, when executed by the set of processors, further cause the set of processors to:

cause, in response to a detection of the watch check event while the sleep watch check rule is deactivated, the change in visibility of the display according to the first watch check rule.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the detection of the enabling event is based on sensor data.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the sensor data indicates one or more of:

the occurrence of a plurality of watch check events within a time period, the user is awake, or the user has operated a manual user input interface of the apparatus.

16. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the instructions further include instructions which, when executed by the set of processors, further cause the set of processors to:

activate, in response to detecting the enabling event, the first watch check rule to cause the change in visibility of the display.

17. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the detection of the enabling event is based on the watch check event occurring within a predetermined time before a preset alarm.

18. An apparatus comprising:

a display;

a set of sensors to generate sensor data, the set of sensors including an ambient light sensor;

a set of one or more processors coupled to the display and the set of sensors;

a non-transitory machine readable storage medium coupled to the set of one or more processors and having stored therein instructions which, when executed by the set of one or more processors, cause the set of one or more processors to;

detect, using the sensor data, that a first activity state of a user is active,

detect, using sensor data from the ambient light sensor, a light level near the display,

detect, using the sensor data, a watch check event that is associated with a watch check rule that causes a change in visibility of the display,

disable, while the first activity state of the user is active and based on sensor data from the ambient light sensor, the detection of the watch check event from causing the change in visibility of the display according to the first watch check rule,

detect an enabling event based at least in part on sensor data indicating an occurrence of a plurality of watch check events within a time period or a selection of a manual user input interface of the apparatus, and

deactivate, in response to detecting the enabling event and based on sensor data from the ambient light sensor, a first activity watch check rule that disabled the detection of the watch check event from causing the change in visibility of the display according to the first watch check rule.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the instructions further include instructions which, when executed by the set of processors, further cause the set of processors to:

cause, in response to the determination that the sensor data matches the watch check rule and based on sensor data from the ambient light sensor, the change in visibility of the display according to the watch check rule.
