1. An apparatus to be implemented in a long term evolution (LTE) user equipment (UE), the apparatus comprising:

  • processing circuitry to;

    receive a message to configure the LTE UE to provide a power consumption preference of the LTE UE to an evolved Node B (eNB) with which the LTE UE is in a radio resource control (RRC) connected state;

    determine that the power consumption preference of the LTE UE is a low power consumption preference rather than a normal power consumption preference;

    assemble UE assistance information including an indicator having a first value to indicate the power consumption preference of the LTE UE, wherein the indicator is a single bit, wherein the UE assistance information further includes a suggested discontinuous reception (DRX) parameter, and wherein the UE assistance information includes one or more bits to indicate that the suggested DRX parameter is one of a pre-defined set of DRX parameters; and

    initiate transmission of the UE assistance information to the eNB responsive to the message to configure the LTE UE to provide the power consumption preference to the eNB and the determination that the power consumption preference of the LTE UE is the low power consumption preference; and

    transceiver circuitry to transmit the UE assistance information to the eNB.
