Abstract

Access devices may receive signals over a network and calculate a frequency spectrum of the received signals. An analyzer system may collect the frequency spectrum data from multiple access devices, and based on the collected data, detect, identify, and locate sources of anomalies in a communication network.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

determining, by a computing device, an assigned frequency range associated with one or more access devices;

receiving, by the computing device and from the one or more access devices, frequency spectrum data;

determining, a signal characteristic of the frequency spectrum data for frequencies outside the assigned frequency range;

comparing, by the computing device, the signal characteristic of the frequency spectrum data for frequencies outside the assigned frequency range, to a plurality of pre-characterized signal characteristics; and

determining, by the computing device and based on the comparing, a signal anomaly.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the frequency spectrum data corresponds to a plurality of access devices connected to a network.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the assigned frequency range corresponds to signals that are phase or amplitude modulated.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the comparing further comprises:

determining, a signal characteristic of the frequency spectrum data for frequencies within the assigned frequency range.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

determining that a noise level in the assigned frequency range satisfies a threshold amplitude; and

determining a location of a noise ingress based on the noise level.

6. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

determining that an energy level in the assigned frequency range satisfies a predetermined threshold; and

determining a location of a wideband interference based on the energy level.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the frequency spectrum data comprises multiple sets of data collected at different time periods, the method further comprising:

determining, based on comparing a first set of data of the multiple sets of data to other sets of data of the multiple sets of data, difference values; and

determining the signal characteristic based on the difference values.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the frequency spectrum data corresponds to the frequency spectrum data for a plurality of signal channels.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the frequency spectrum data comprises time sampled data of received via a network by a plurality of access devices.

10. A method comprising:

determining, by a computing device, and for signals outside an assigned frequency range for communication channels in a network, a plurality of frequency characteristics;

comparing, by the computing device, the plurality of frequency characteristics to a plurality of pre-characterized fault types;

determining, by the computing device and based on the comparing, that a fault exists;

and

locating, by the computing device, and based on the plurality of frequency characteristics, the fault in the network.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the comparing the plurality of frequency characteristics to the plurality of pre-characterized fault types comprises:

determining frequency signatures for each of a plurality of access devices;

determining, based on a comparison of the plurality of frequency characteristics to the frequency signatures, a difference approximation associated with a first access device; and

comparing the difference approximation to the plurality of pre-characterized fault types.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the determining the difference approximation is further based on detecting, by curve fitting, a slope value that satisfies a predetermined slope threshold.

13. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

analyzing frequency spectrum data for the communication channels; and

generating, based on the analyzing, the plurality of frequency characteristics of the signals in the network.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the frequency spectrum data comprises time sampled data of the signals received via the network by a plurality of access devices.

15. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

selecting, based on the determined fault, a fault detection algorithm from a plurality of fault detection algorithms; and

wherein locating the fault further comprises;

locating, based on the fault detection algorithm, the fault in the network.

16. A method comprising:

collecting, by a computing device, a first set of frequency spectrum data for frequencies outside an assigned frequency range corresponding to a plurality of access devices in a network;

collecting, by the computing device, a second set of frequency spectrum data for frequencies outside the assigned frequency range;

determining, by the computing device, a frequency characteristic value based on the first set of frequency spectrum data and the second set of frequency spectrum data;

comparing, by the computing device, the frequency characteristic value to a threshold value; and

determining, based on the comparing, a signal fault associated with the network.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the first set of frequency spectrum data and the second set of frequency spectrum data correspond to frequencies that are not phase or amplitude modulated for communication channels in the network.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the collecting the first set of frequency spectrum data and collecting the second set of frequency spectrum data comprise:

analyzing data associated with signals from the plurality of access devices via two or more signal channels, wherein the first set of frequency spectrum data and the second set of frequency spectrum data are collected during different time periods.

19. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

determining, by comparing the first set of frequency spectrum data and the second set of frequency spectrum data, difference values; and

determining a root-mean-square of the difference values, wherein the comparing the frequency characteristic value to the threshold value comprises;

comparing the root-mean-square of the difference values to the threshold value.

20. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

collecting a third set of frequency spectrum data within the assigned frequency range and a fourth set of frequency spectrum data within the assigned frequency range;

analyzing two or more of the first set, second set, third set, or fourth set of frequency spectrum data in order to determine an average noise reception value; and

causing, based on the average noise reception value, dynamic adjustment of the threshold value.

21. The method of claim 16, further comprising:

selecting, based on the determined signal fault, a fault detection algorithm from a plurality of fault detection algorithms.

22. The method of claim 16, wherein the frequency characteristic value comprises a noise reception value.
