Abstract

According to one disclosed embodiment, a smart power delivery system includes a power conversion unit having a communication module and a power management module that can convert mains power into an optimized voltage and limited current used to power an electronic device. In one embodiment, a power conversion unit can optimize an output voltage by communicating with a connected electronic device and exchanging parameters representing desired characteristics of the output voltage. In one embodiment, an electronic device receives power from a power conversion unit through a wired power conduit. In another embodiment, an electronic device receives power from a power conversion unit through a wireless power conduit. In one embodiment, an optimal voltage is selected after negotiation between multiple electronic devices and a power conversion unit.

Claims

1. An electronic device configured to deliver power, comprising:

a first circuit configured to connect a power source to a second electronic device via a first power delivery conduit;

a second circuit configured to connect the power source to a third electronic device via a second power delivery conduit, the first power delivery conduit being configured to deliver power to the second electronic device in parallel with the second power delivery conduit delivering power to the third electronic device;

circuitry configured to exchange information with the second electronic device and the third electronic device, wherein the information includes an indication of respective device power requirements; and

a power management module (PMM) configured to manage power delivery to the respective electronic devices, wherein

based on the indication of respective device power requirements, the PMM is configured to manage delivery of power to the second electronic device and the third electronic device by partitioning and dynamically applying the power on a per conduit basis across the first power delivery conduit and the second power delivery conduit, wherein

the PMM is configured to deliver power on at least one of a first-come-first-served basis, a programmed prioritization basis, a quickest time to charge basis, or an equal current partition basis.

2. The electronic device of claim 1, wherein

the PMM is configured to constantly deliver power to the second electronic device, and deliver intermittent power to the third electronic device.

3. The electronic device of claim 2, wherein

the PMM is configured to constantly deliver power that is dynamically varied to the second electronic device.

4. The electronic device of claim 1, wherein

the first power delivery conduit is a wired conduit.

5. The electronic device of claim 4, wherein

the second power delivery conduit is a wireless conduit.

6. The electronic device of claim 4, wherein

the second power delivery conduit is a wired conduit.

7. The electronic device of claim 1, wherein

the first power delivery conduit and the second power delivery conduit are both wireless conduits.

8. The electronic device of claim 4, wherein

the wired conduit includes a USB interface plug-in connector.

9. The electronic device of claim 1, wherein the PMM is configured to partition the power delivered to the respective power delivery conduits to match substantially different power requirements of the second electronic device and third electronic device.

10. The electronic device of claim 1, further comprising

an electrical interface configured to receive power from the power source.

11. A method for delivering power from an electronic device, comprising:

conveying power from a power source through a first circuit connected to a second electronic device via a first power delivery conduit;

conveying power from the power source through a second circuit connected to a third electronic device via a second power delivery conduit, the first power delivery conduit being configured to deliver power to the second electronic device in parallel with the second power delivery conduit delivering power to the third electronic device;

exchanging first information with a second electronic device via a first power delivery conduit, the first information including an indication of device power requirements of the second electronic device;

exchanging second information with a third electronic device via a second power delivery conduit, the second information that including an indication of device power requirements of the second electronic device; and

managing with a power management module (PMM) power delivery to the respective electronic devices, wherein

based on the indication of respective device power requirements, the managing further comprising partitioning and dynamically applying the electric power on a per conduit basis across the first power delivery conduit and the second power delivery conduit, wherein

the managing further comprises delivering power on at least one of a first-come-first-served basis, a programmed prioritization basis, a quickest time to charge basis, or an equal current partition basis.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein

the managing comprises constantly delivering power to the second electronic device, and delivering intermittent power to the third electronic device.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein

the managing further comprises dynamically varying power to the second electronic device.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein

the first power delivery conduit is a wired conduit.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein

the second power delivery conduit is a wireless conduit.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein

the second power delivery conduit is a wired conduit.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein the managing further comprises partitioning the power delivered to the respective power delivery conduits to match substantially different power requirements of the second electronic device and third electronic device.

18. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

receiving input power from the power source.
