Abstract

In one embodiment, a peripheral management device may have a controller configured to communicate with a gaming machine and a portable electronic device. The controller may be configured to: (i) receive a peripheral data packet from a gaming machine processor, the peripheral data packet including at least one command; (ii) determine whether to process the peripheral data packet on at least one peripheral device of the gaming machine or at least one virtual peripheral device of the portable electronic device; (iii) generate an instructional data packet for the at least one virtual peripheral device if the peripheral data packet is determined to be processed on the at least one virtual peripheral device; and (iv) transmit the instructional data packet to the portable electronic device.

Claims

1. A gaming device, comprising:

a processor configured to operate the gaming device to provide a game of chance to a user of the gaming machine;

a user input device configured to receive one or more user inputs from the user for use with the game of chance;

a display device configured to present gaming information pertaining to the game of chance;

a wireless interface configured to support wireless communication with at least one external virtual peripheral device associated with at least one portable electronic device;

at least one internal peripheral device configured to provide at least one internal peripheral function for the gaming device; and

a peripheral management device operatively connected to the processor, the at least one internal peripheral device and the wireless interface, the peripheral management device configured to;

associate the at least one external virtual peripheral device of the at least one portable electronic device with a corresponding one of the at least one internal peripheral device;

receive a funds transfer request via the wireless interface, the funds transfer request being from a selected external virtual peripheral device of the at least one external virtual peripheral device associated with the at least one portable electronic device;

determine the corresponding internal peripheral device for the selected external virtual peripheral device;

provide the funds transfer request to the corresponding internal peripheral device;

process the funds transfer request at least in part at the the gaming device as if the funds transfer request were for the corresponding internal peripheral device to thereby initiate transfer of funds to the gaming device for use as available funds thereon to make wagers on the game of chance provided by the gaming device; and

provide, via the wireless interface, a response to the funds transfer request to the selected external virtual peripheral device.

2. A gaming device as recited in claim 1, wherein the peripheral management device is further configured to:

evaluate whether the portable electronic device is substantially proximate to the gaming machine; and

authenticate the portable electronic device if the portable electronic device is determined to be substantially proximate to the gaming device.

3. A gaming device as recited in claim 1, wherein the gaming device is a slot machine.

4. A gaming device as recited in claim 1,

wherein the selected virtual peripheral device has a graphical representation displayed by the portable electronic device, and

wherein the funds transfer request is initiated via a graphical user interface displayed by the portable electronic device.

5. A gaming device as recited in claim 1, wherein the available funds are credits that are available for wagers on the game of chance provided by the gaming device.

6. A gaming device as recited in claim 1, wherein the at least one internal peripheral device includes at least one of a bill acceptor, a card reader, a button, a touch screen, a microphone, a player tracking device, a bar code reader, or a camera.

7. A gaming device as recited in claim 1, wherein the funds transfer request is parsed by the peripheral management device to determine at least one of (i) a fund amount;

(ii) a source of funds; and

/or (iii) a unique user identifier and password.

8. A gaming device as recited in claim 1, wherein the funds transfer request is parsed by the peripheral management device to determine at least a destination address.

9. A gaming device as recited in claim 1, wherein the funds transfer request is parsed by the peripheral management device to determine at least a source.

10. A gaming device as recited in claim 1, wherein a source of funds is at least one of cash, a player account, a credit card, a checking account, a virtual ticket, or an electronically-readable ticket.

11. A gaming device as recited in claim 1, wherein the gaming device electronically communicates with an authentication server to authenticate the funds transfer request.

12. A gaming device, comprising:

a processor configured to operate the gaming device to provide a game of chance to a user of the gaming machine;

a user input device configured to receive one or more user inputs from the user for use with the game of chance;

a display device configured to present gaming information pertaining to the game of chance;

a wireless interface configured to support wireless communication with at least one external virtual peripheral device associated with at least one portable electronic device;

at least one internal peripheral device configured to provide at least one internal peripheral function for the gaming device, the at least one external virtual peripheral device of the at least one portable electronic device being associated with a corresponding one of the at least one internal peripheral device; and

a peripheral controller operatively connected to the processor, the at least one internal peripheral device and the wireless interface, the peripheral controller configured to;

receive a funds transfer request via the wireless interface, the funds transfer request being from or to a selected external virtual peripheral device of the at least one external virtual peripheral device associated with the at least one portable electronic device;

identify the corresponding internal peripheral device for the selected external virtual peripheral device;

process the funds transfer request at least in part at the peripheral controller or the processor of the gaming device as if the funds transfer request were for the corresponding internal peripheral device to thereby initiate transfer of funds to or from the gaming device.

13. A gaming device as recited in claim 12, wherein the gaming device is further configured to:

determine whether the portable electronic device is proximate to the gaming device; and

deem the portable electronic device authorized for use with the gaming device if the portable electronic device is determined to be proximate to the gaming device.

14. A gaming device as recited in claim 12, wherein the gaming device is further configured to:

determine whether the portable electronic device is adjacent to the gaming device; and

deem the portable electronic device authorized for use with the gaming device if the portable electronic device is determined to be adjacent to the gaming device.

15. A gaming device as recited in claim 12, wherein the gaming device is further configured to:

receive location information for the portable electronic device; and

deem the portable electronic device authorized for use with the gaming device based on the location information.

16. A gaming machine as recited in claim 12, wherein the funds transfer request has an associated source of funds, and wherein the source of funds is at least one of cash, a player account, a credit card, a checking account, a virtual ticket, or an electronically-readable ticket.

17. A gaming device as recited in claim 12, wherein the at least one internal peripheral device is one of a bill acceptor, a card reader, a bar code reader, or a camera.

18. A gaming machine as recited in claim 12, wherein the corresponding internal peripheral device comprises a player tracking device, and the selected external virtual peripheral device comprises a virtual player tracking device.

19. A computer readable medium for acquiring funds at a gaming device, said computer readable medium comprising:

computer program code for managing a plurality of internal peripheral devices of the gaming device;

computer program code for associating each of at least one external virtual peripheral device associated with at least one portable electronic device with a corresponding one of the plurality of internal peripheral devices;

computer program code for receiving a funds transfer request via a wireless interface, the funds transfer request being from a selected external virtual peripheral device of the at least one external virtual peripheral device associated with the at least one portable electronic device;

computer program code for determining the corresponding internal peripheral device for the selected external virtual peripheral device;

computer program code for processing the funds transfer request at least in part by the gaming device as if the funds transfer request were for the corresponding internal peripheral device to thereby initiate transfer of funds with the gaming device, wherein the funds if being transferred to the gaming device are available funds thereon to make wagers on a game of chance provided by the gaming device; and

computer program code for providing, via the wireless interface, a response to the funds transfer request to the selected external virtual peripheral device.

20. A computer readable medium as recited in claim 19, wherein the funds transfer request has an associated source of funds, and wherein the source of funds is at least one of cash, a player account, a credit card, a checking account, a virtual ticket, or an electronically-readable ticket.

21. A computer readable medium as recited in claim 19, wherein the corresponding internal peripheral device comprises a player tracking device, and the selected external virtual peripheral device comprises a virtual player tracking device.

22. A gaming device, comprising:

a processor configured to operate the gaming device to provide a game of chance to a user of the gaming machine;

a user input device configured to receive one or more user inputs from the user for use with the game of chance;

a display device configured to present gaming information pertaining to the game of chance;

a wireless interface configured to support wireless communication with at least one external virtual peripheral device associated with at least one portable electronic device;

at least one internal peripheral device configured to provide at least one internal peripheral function for the gaming device, the at least one external virtual peripheral device of the at least one portable electronic device being associated with a corresponding one of the at least one internal peripheral device; and

a peripheral controller operatively connected to the processor, the at least one internal peripheral device and the wireless interface, the peripheral controller configured to;

receive a funds transfer request, the funds transfer request being from a selected internal peripheral device of the at least one internal peripheral device associated with the gaming device;

identify the corresponding external virtual peripheral device for the selected internal virtual peripheral device;

process the funds transfer request at least in part at the peripheral controller or the processor of the gaming device as if the funds transfer request were for the corresponding internal peripheral device to thereby initiate transfer of funds from the gaming device to the corresponding external virtual peripheral device; and

providing, via the wireless interface, an indication of the transfer of funds to the selected external virtual peripheral device.

23. A gaming device as recited in claim 22, wherein the gaming device is further configured to:

determine whether the portable electronic device is proximate to the gaming device; and

deem the portable electronic device authorized for use with the gaming device if the portable electronic device is determined to be proximate to the gaming device.

24. A gaming device as recited in claim 22, wherein the gaming device is further configured to:

receive location information for the portable electronic device; and

deem the portable electronic device authorized for use with the gaming device based on the location information.

25. A gaming device as recited in claim 22, wherein the selected internal peripheral device comprises a player tracking device, and the corresponding external virtual peripheral device comprises a virtual player tracking device.

26. A gaming device as recited in claim 22, wherein the selected internal peripheral device comprises a player tracking device, and the corresponding external virtual peripheral device comprises a virtual player tracking device.

27. A gaming machine as recited in claim 22, wherein the selected internal peripheral device comprises a touch screen or button, and the corresponding external virtual peripheral device comprises a virtual printer for presenting a virtual ticket.
