Abstract

Medical techniques include systems and methods for administering a positive pressure ventilation, a positive end expiratory pressure, and a vacuum to a person. Approaches also include treating a person with an intrathoracic pressure regulator so as to modulate or upregulate the autonomic system of the person, and treating a person with a combination of an intrathoracic pressure regulation treatment and an intra-aortic balloon pump treatment.

Claims

1. A ventilation system for use in treating a patient, the system comprising:

a user interface comprising;

a plurality of selectable user inputs, each arranged in a different location on the user interface and corresponding to a predetermined patient size, wherein each selectable user input corresponds to a customized treatment protocol for providing a ventilation procedure, wherein the customized treatment protocol provides a preset respiratory rate, tidal volume, and positive end expiratory pressure delivered to the patient based on the predetermined patient size;

a plurality of displays, each arranged in a different location on the user interface and configured to simultaneously display respiratory rate, tidal volume, and positive end expiratory pressure; and

a selectable input configured to be actuated prior to initiation of any customized treatment protocol by a processor;

a patient port adapted to fluidly communicate with the patient;

a ventilator port that fluidly communicates with a ventilator mechanism for facilitating the ventilation procedure administered to the patient via the patient port;

a port that includes at least one valve configured to control a direction of flow, wherein during administration of the ventilation procedure the at least one valve allows fluid flow between the ventilator port and the patient port; and

an audio output device.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the customized treatment protocol for providing a ventilation procedure provides a preset positive inspiratory pressure delivered to the patient based on patient size, and wherein the user interface displays positive inspiratory pressure.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the user interface further comprises one or more user selectable inputs for adjusting the preset respiratory rate, tidal volume, positive end expiratory pressure, and/or positive inspiratory pressure delivered to the patient.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the user interface comprises a selectable input that prevents adjustment of the preset respiratory rate, tidal volume, positive end expiratory pressure, and/or positive inspiratory pressure delivered to the patient.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the system comprises a plurality of operational modes and one or more additional user-selectable inputs corresponding to the plurality of operational modes.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the plurality of operational modes comprise a continuous positive airway pressure mode and a ventilation mode.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the continuous positive airway pressure mode controls the ports to provide adjustable levels of continuous positive airway pressure to the patient.

8. The system of claim 6, wherein the ventilation mode controls the ports to provide positive pressure ventilation to the patient, with or without positive end expiratory pressure.

9. The system of claim 6, wherein the operational modes comprise preset values for respiratory rate, tidal volume, positive end expiratory pressure, and/or positive inspiratory pressure delivered to the patient based on patient size.

10. The system of claim 6, wherein the user interface further comprises one or more user selectable sub-interfaces for adjusting the continuous positive airway pressure and the provision of positive end expiratory pressure delivered to the patient.

11. The system of claim 1, further comprising a display configured to indicate positive inspiratory pressure delivered to the patient.

12. The system of claim 1, further comprising a physiological sensor adapted to measure one or more of airway pressure, intratracheal pressure, blood pressure, right heart pressure, heart rate, end tidal CO₂, oxygen level, and left heart pressure.

13. The system of claim 1, further comprising an end tidal CO₂ sensor.

14. The system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of selectable user inputs corresponding to patient size correspond to patient height.

15. The system of claim 1, wherein the user-selectable inputs corresponding to patient size are arranged in a substantially circular orientation.

16. The system of claim 1, wherein the system provides a fraction inspired oxygen protocol.

17. The system of claim 1, further comprising a battery, and wherein the user interface comprises a battery level indicator.

18. A ventilation device for use in treating a patient, the device comprising:

a housing comprising;

a patient port adapted to fluidly communicate with a patient'"'"'s airway; and

at least one valve configured to control air flow through the patient port;

a processor disposed within the housing;

memory disposed within the housing;

an audio output device; and

a user interface disposed on the housing and comprising;

a plurality of selectable user inputs, each arranged in a different location on the user interface and corresponding to a predetermined patient height, wherein each selectable user input corresponds to a customized treatment protocol for providing ventilation to the patient based on the predetermined patient height stored in the memory that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to provide a ventilation procedure by controlling airflow through the patient port at least partially through the at least one valve; and

a selectable input configured to be actuated prior to initiation of any customized treatment protocol by the processor,

wherein the customized treatment protocol provides a preset respiratory rate, tidal volume, and positive end expiratory pressure delivered to the patient based on the predetermined patient height, and wherein the user interface comprises displays configured to indicate the respiratory rate, tidal volume, and positive end expiratory pressure.

19. The device of claim 18, wherein the customized treatment protocol for providing ventilation provides a preset positive inspiratory pressure delivered to the patient based on patient height, and wherein the user interface displays the positive inspiratory pressure.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the user interface further comprises one or more user selectable inputs for adjusting the preset respiratory rate, tidal volume, positive end expiratory pressure, and/or positive inspiratory pressure delivered to the patient.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein the user interface comprises a selectable input that prevents adjustment of the preset respiratory rate, tidal volume, positive end expiratory pressure, and/or positive inspiratory pressure delivered to the patient.

22. The device of claim 18, further comprising an internal positive pressure source disposed in the housing and in fluid communication with the patient port.

23. The device of claim 18, further comprising a port configured to place an external positive pressure source in fluid communication with the patient port.

24. The device of claim 18, further comprising an internal negative pressure source disposed within the housing.

25. The device of claim 24, wherein the internal negative pressure source is a vacuum.

26. The device of claim 18, further comprising a port configured to place an external source of negative pressure in fluid communication with the patient port.

27. The device of claim 18, further comprising a battery, and wherein the user interface comprises a battery level indicator.

28. The device of claim 18, further comprising a display configured to indicate positive inspiratory pressure delivered to the patient.

29. The device of claim 18 wherein the at least one valve is one or more of a check valve, control valve, threshold valve, and a solenoid valve.

30. The device of claim 18, wherein the at least one valve controls flow of inspiratory gases, expiratory gases, or both.

31. The device of claim 18, wherein the user-selectable inputs corresponding to patient height are arranged in a substantially circular orientation.

32. The device of claim 18, wherein the processor is programmed or configured to provide a fraction inspired oxygen protocol.

33. A ventilation device for use in treating a patient, the device comprising:

a housing comprising;

a patient port adapted to fluidly communicate with a patient'"'"'s airway; and

at least one valve configured to control air flow through the patient port;

a processor disposed within the housing;

memory disposed within the housing;

an audio output device; and

a user interface disposed on the housing and comprising;

a plurality of selectable icons, each arranged in a different location on the user interface and corresponding to a predetermined patient height, wherein each icon corresponds to a customized treatment protocol for providing ventilation to the patient based on the predetermined patient height stored in the memory that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to provide a ventilation procedure by controlling airflow through the patient port at least partially through the at least one valve;

a plurality of displays, each arranged in a different location on the user interface and configured to simultaneously display respiratory rate, tidal volume, and positive end expiratory pressure;

a plurality of user-selectable inputs arranged on the user interface adjacent the plurality of displays, the user-selectable inputs configured to allow a user to adjust respiratory rate, tidal volume, and positive end expiratory pressure; and

a selectable input configured to be actuated prior to initiation of any customized treatment protocol by the processor,

wherein the customized treatment protocol provides a preset respiratory rate, tidal volume, and positive end expiratory pressure delivered to the patient based on the predetermined patient height.
