Abstract

A flanged vehicle-mounting sleeve is provided for use in association with a heavy duty vehicle, chassis-mountable, data bus signal wiring harness coupling. The coupling includes a receptacle having a generally circular cross-section and being adapted to be accommodated in longitudinal pass-through relation by a corresponding vehicle chassis mount including a mounting aperture for the coupling. The receptacle may also include a receptacle-flange engagable in receptacle-flange matching chassis-secured relation with a compatible receptacle-flange chassis mount adjacent the vehicle chassis mounting aperture with the receptacle supported thereby in pass-thru relation with the aperture. The optional sleeve is adapted to be slidably mounted into cooperative engagement in conjoined, axially and radially fixed relation on the receptacle with an alternative sleeve-flange engagable in flange-matching chassis-secured relation adjacent the vehicle chassis mounting aperture with the receptacle supported thereby in pass-thru relation with the aperture.

Claims

1. A data communication receptacle, comprising:

a receptacle body having a generally circular cross-section, the receptacle body adapted to pass-through a vehicle chassis mounting aperture in a vehicle chassis; and

,

an adapter formed as a sleeve having a complementary inner circumferential surface to the receptacle body and constructed and arranged to slidably fit about the receptacle body whereby the internal circumferential surface is in an abutting relation with the receptacle body, wherein the adapter is constructed and arranged to be secured to the receptacle body, the adapter being constructed and arranged to engage with the vehicle chassis to fix the data communication receptacle to the vehicle chassis.

2. The data communication receptacle according to claim 1, wherein the adapter is constructed and arranged to be axially secured to the receptacle body.

3. The data communication receptacle according to claim 1, further comprising a plurality of longitudinally-extending bores adapted to receive data bus signal wiring and associated contact terminals.

4. The data communication receptacle according to claim 1, wherein the receptacle body includes a cam surface configured to rotatingly draw a plug into axial engagement with the receptacle.

5. The data communication receptacle according to claim 1, further comprising a key and slot coupling constructed and arranged to secure an aligned fit between the adapter and the receptacle body to resist torsional movement of the adapter relative to the receptacle body.

6. The data communication receptacle according to claim 5, wherein the receptacle body includes the slot and the adapter includes the key.

7. The data communication receptacle according to claim 5, wherein the adapter is constructed and arranged to be axially secured to the receptacle body.

8. The data communication receptacle according to claim 1, wherein the adapter includes an outer circumferential surface having a threaded section.

9. The data communication receptacle according to claim 8, further comprising a lock nut engageable with the threaded section.

10. The data communication receptacle according to claim 8, wherein the outer circumferential surface includes a flat section.

11. The data communication receptacle according to claim 1, wherein the adapter includes an outer circumferential surface and an adapter flange radially outwardly extending from the outer circumference.

12. The data communication receptacle according to claim 11, wherein the receptacle body includes a receptacle mounting flange and wherein the adapter flange is constructed and arranged to abut the receptacle mounting flange.

13. A data communication receptacle, comprising:

a receptacle body having a generally circular cross-section, the receptacle body adapted to pass-through a vehicle chassis mounting aperture in a vehicle chassis;

an adapter formed as a sleeve having a complementary inner circumferential surface to the receptacle body and constructed and arranged to slidably fit about the receptacle body whereby the internal circumferential surface is in an abutting relation with the receptacle body, wherein the adapter is constructed and arranged to be axially secured to the receptacle body, the adapter being constructed and arranged to engage with the vehicle chassis to fix the data communication receptacle to the vehicle chassis, the adapter including an outer circumferential surface and an adapter flange radially outwardly extending from the outer circumference; and

,

a key and slot coupling constructed and arranged to secure an aligned fit between the adapter and the receptacle body to resist torsional movement of the adapter relative to the receptacle body.

14. The data communication receptacle according to claim 13, wherein the receptacle body includes the slot and the adapter includes the key.

15. The data communication receptacle according to claim 13, further comprising a plurality of longitudinally-extending bores adapted to receive data bus signal wiring and associated contact terminals.

16. The data communication receptacle according to claim 13, wherein the receptacle body includes a cam surface configured to rotatingly draw a plug into axial engagement with the receptacle.

17. A wiring harness for coupling to a vehicle data bus, the wiring harness comprising:

a first branch, a second branch and a third branch;

a first connector attached to the first branch;

a second connector attached to the second branch; and

,

a third connector attached to the third branch, the third connector comprising a data communication receptacle, the data communication receptacle comprising;

a receptacle body having a generally circular cross-section, the receptacle body adapted to pass-through a vehicle chassis mounting aperture in a vehicle chassis; and

,

an adapter formed as a sleeve having a complementary inner circumferential surface to the receptacle body and constructed and arranged to slidably fit about the receptacle body whereby the internal circumferential surface is in an abutting relation with the receptacle body, the adapter is constructed and arranged to be secured to the receptacle body, the adapter being constructed and arranged to engage with the vehicle chassis to fix the data communication receptacle to the vehicle chassis.

18. The wiring harness according to claim 17, wherein the first connector is configured to connect to a vehicle data bus.

19. The wiring harness according to claim 17, wherein the second connector is configured to connect to a telematics device.

20. The wiring harness according to claim 17, wherein the third connector is configured to connect to a diagnostic scanner.

21. The wiring harness according to claim 17, wherein the first connector is configured to connect to a vehicle data bus, the second connector is configured to connect to a telematics device, and the third connector is configured to connect to a diagnostic scanner.

22. The wiring harness according to claim 17, wherein the adapter is constructed and arranged to be axially secured to the receptacle body.

23. The wiring harness according to claim 17, wherein the data communication receptacle further comprises a plurality of longitudinally-extending bores adapted to receive data bus signal wiring and associated contact terminals.

24. The wiring harness according to claim 17, wherein the receptacle body includes a cam surface configured to rotatingly draw a plug into axial engagement with the receptacle.

25. The wiring harness according to claim 17, further comprising a key and slot coupling constructed and arranged to secure an aligned fit between the adapter and the receptacle body to resist torsional movement of the adapter relative to the receptacle body.

26. The wiring harness according to claim 25, wherein the receptacle body includes the slot and the adapter includes the key.

27. The wiring harness according to claim 25, wherein the adapter is constructed and arranged to be axially secured to the receptacle body.

28. The wiring harness according to claim 17, wherein the adapter includes an outer circumferential surface having a threaded section.

29. The wiring harness according to claim 28, further comprising a lock nut engageable with the threaded section.

30. The wiring harness according to claim 28, wherein the outer circumferential surface includes a flat section.

31. The wiring harness according to claim 17, wherein the adapter includes an outer circumferential surface and an adapter flange radially outwardly extending from the outer circumference.

32. The wiring harness according to claim 31, wherein the receptacle body includes a receptacle mounting flange and wherein the adapter flange is constructed and arranged to abut the receptacle mounting flange.

33. A kit of parts, comprising:

a data communication receptacle including a receptacle body having a generally circular cross-section, the receptacle body adapted to pass-through a vehicle chassis mounting aperture in a vehicle chassis; and

,

a plurality of different adapters, each adapter being formed as a sleeve having a complementary inner circumferential surface to the receptacle body and constructed and arranged to slidably fit about the receptacle body whereby the internal circumferential surface is in an abutting relation with the receptacle body, wherein each adapter is constructed and arranged to be secured to the receptacle body, at least one adapter being constructed and arranged to engage with the vehicle chassis to fix the data communication receptacle to the vehicle chassis.

34. The kit according to claim 33, wherein at least one adapter is constructed and arranged to be axially secured to the receptacle body.

35. The kit according to claim 33, wherein each adapter includes an outer circumferential surface and each adapter includes an adapter flange radially outwardly extending from the outer circumference.

36. The kit according to claim 33, further comprising a key and slot coupling constructed and arranged to secure an aligned fit between each adapter and the receptacle body to resist torsional movement of the adapter relative to the receptacle body.

37. The kit according to claim 36, wherein the receptacle body includes the slot and each adapter includes the key.

38. The kit according to claim 36, wherein at least one adapter is constructed and arranged to be axially secured to the receptacle body.

39. The kit according to claim 33, wherein at least one adapter includes an outer circumferential surface having a threaded section.

40. The kit according to claim 39, further comprising a lock nut engageable with the threaded section.

41. The kit according to claim 39, wherein the outer circumferential surface includes a flat section.

42. The kit according to claim 33, further comprising a wiring harness for coupling to a vehicle data bus, the wiring harness comprising a first branch, a second branch and a third branch, a first connector is attached to the first branch, a second connector is attached to the second branch and a third connector is attached to the third branch, the third connector comprising the data communication receptacle.

43. The kit according to claim 42, wherein the first connector is configured to connect to a vehicle data bus, the second connector is configured to connect to a telematics device, and the data communication receptacle is configured to connect to a diagnostic scanner.

44. A method of installing a data communication receptacle to a vehicle chassis, the method comprising:

providing a data communication receptacle including a receptacle body having a generally circular cross-section;

providing a plurality of different adapters, each adapter being formed as a sleeve having a complementary inner circumferential surface to the receptacle body;

slidably fitting one of the plurality of different adapters about the receptacle body whereby the internal circumferential surface is in an abutting relation with the receptacle body;

securing the one of the plurality of different adapters to the receptacle body; and

securing the one of the plurality of different adapters to the vehicle chassis to fix the data communication receptacle to the vehicle chassis.

45. The method according to claim 44, aligning a key and slot coupling the one of the plurality of different adapters and the receptacle body to resist torsional movement of one of the plurality of different adapters relative to the receptacle body.

46. The method according to claim 44, further comprising:

providing a wiring harness for coupling to a vehicle data bus, the wiring harness having a first branch, a second branch and a third branch, a first connector is attached to the first branch, a second connector is attached to the second branch and the data communication receptacle is attached to the third branch;

connecting the first connector to the vehicle data bus; and

connecting the second connector to a telematics device;

wherein securing the one of the plurality of adapters to the vehicle chassis to fix the data communication receptacle to the vehicle chassis comprises securing the one of the plurality of adapters to the vehicle chassis such that the data communication receptacle is connectable to a diagnostic scanner.

47. The method according to claim 44, wherein at least one of the plurality of different adapters includes an outer circumferential surface having a threaded section.

48. The method according to claim 47, securing the one of the plurality of adapters to the vehicle chassis comprises engaging a lock nut with the threaded section.

49. A method of installing a data communication receptacle to a vehicle chassis, the method comprising:

providing a data communication receptacle including a receptacle body having a generally circular cross-section;

providing a plurality of different adapters, each adapter being formed as a sleeve having a complementary inner circumferential surface to the receptacle body;

slidably fitting one of the plurality of different adapters about the receptacle body whereby the internal circumferential surface is in an abutting relation with the receptacle body;

securing the one of the plurality of different adapters to the receptacle body; and

securing the one of the plurality of different adapters to the vehicle chassis to fix the data communication receptacle to the vehicle chassis; and

,

passing the receptacle body through a vehicle chassis mounting aperture in the vehicle chassis.

50. The method according to claim 49, wherein securing the one of the plurality of different adapters to the receptacle body comprises axially securing the one of the plurality of different adapters to the receptacle body.

51. A method of installing a data communication receptacle to a vehicle chassis, the method comprising:

providing a data communication receptacle including a receptacle body having a generally circular cross-section;

providing a plurality of different adapters, each adapter being formed as a sleeve having a complementary inner circumferential surface to the receptacle body;

slidably fitting one of the plurality of different adapters about the receptacle body whereby the internal circumferential surface is in an abutting relation with the receptacle body;

securing the one of the plurality of different adapters to the receptacle body; and

securing the one of the plurality of different adapters to the vehicle chassis to fix the data communication receptacle to the vehicle chassis,

wherein providing a plurality of different adapters comprises providing a plurality of different adapters each having an adapter flange radially outwardly extending from an outer circumference of a respective adapter, and wherein securing the one of the plurality of adapters to the vehicle chassis comprises engaging the adapter flange with the vehicle chassis adjacent a vehicle chassis mounting aperture in the vehicle chassis.
