Abstract

This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus for controlling transitions in an optically switchable device. In one aspect, a controller for a tintable window may include a processor, an input for receiving output signals from sensors, and instructions for causing the processor to determine a level of tint of the tintable window, and an output for controlling the level of tint in the tintable window. The instructions may include a relationship between the received output signals and the level of tint, with the relationship employing output signals from an exterior photosensor, an interior photosensor, an occupancy sensor, an exterior temperature sensor, and a transmissivity sensor. In some instances, the controller may receive output signals over a network and/or be interfaced with a network, and in some instances, the controller may be a standalone controller that is not interfaced with a network.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

(a) receiving, (I) a window controller communicatively coupled, (II) over a network, and (III) with a plurality of sensors, output signals from two or more sensors of the plurality of sensors, wherein one of the two or more sensors is an exterior photosensor proximate to at least one tintable window, and wherein another of the two or more sensors is an interior photosensor proximate to the at least one tintable window, and wherein at least one of the plurality of sensors is a photovoltaic cell;

(b) with the window controller, determining a level of tint for the tintable window using the output signals received; and

(c) with the window controller, automatically providing instructions to change the level of tint of the tintable window to the level of tint determined in (b).

2. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the output signals comprises receiving sensor output signals from any two or more of the sensors from the network.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the network comprises a building management system.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the output signals comprises receiving sensor output signals produced by one or more sensors outside a room containing the tintable window.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving output signals comprises receiving an output signal from an exterior photosensor disposed on a roof.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the exterior photosensor is a photovoltaic cell.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving output signals comprises receiving an output signal from a transmissivity sensor that detects light passing through the tintable window.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving output signals comprises receiving an output signal from exterior photosensors disposed on sides of a facility.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein at least one of the exterior photosensors is the photovoltaic cell.

10. The method of claim 8, further comprising tracking irradiance and/or illuminance on a side of the facility as a sun changes position throughout a day.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving output signals comprises receiving an output signal via wireless communication.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the two or more sensors comprise an exterior photosensor, and wherein the tintable window is in a zone comprising a plurality of tintable windows, and wherein the method further comprises determining a level of tint for the plurality of tintable windows using output signals from the exterior photosensor.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the output signals comprises receiving output signals from sensors associated with a zone of tintable windows.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the network is a wireless communications network.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the network comprises the at least one tintable window and the window controller.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the window controller is configured to communicate using a protocol selected from the group consisting of Bluetooth, WiFi, Zigbee, and EnOcean.

17. A method comprising:

(a) over a wireless communications network, receiving output signals from any two or more sensors, the wireless communications network comprising a plurality of window controllers which comprise (i) a master and/or intermediate window controller and (ii) an end window controller, wherein at least one controller of the plurality of window controllers is configured to receive the output signals, wherein at least one of the two or more sensors is a photosensor;

(b) using the at least one controller to determine a level of tint for at least one tintable window by utilizing the output signals received; and

(c) using the at least one controller to automatically provide instructions to change the level of tint of the at least one tintable window to the level of tint determined in (b).

18. A method comprising:

(a) receiving, (I) at a window controller communicatively coupled, (II) over a network, (III) with a plurality of sensors, output signals from at least two exterior photosensors of a plurality of sensors; and

, with the window controller;

(b) making a comparison of the output signals from the at least two exterior photosensors;

(c) determining a level of tint for a tintable window based at least in part on the comparison; and

(d) automatically providing instructions to change the level of tint of the tintable window to the level of tint determined in (c).

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising, from the comparison, determining whether one of the exterior photosensors is shaded.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the at least two exterior photosensors comprise a photovoltaic cell.

21. A method of controlling at least one tintable window located in a facility, wherein changing a level of tint of the at least one tintable window is controlled automatically, the method comprising:

(a) receiving output signals from two or more sensors over a wireless communications network, wherein at least one of the two or more sensors is a photosensor, wherein the wireless communications network comprises a plurality of window controllers that comprise (i) a master and/or intermediate window controller and (ii) an end window controller, and wherein the master and/or intermediate window controller and the end window controller communicate by wireless communication;

(b) determining a level of tint for the tintable window by using the output signals received; and

(c) providing instructions to change the level of tint of the tintable window to the level of tint determined in (b).

22. A method comprising:

(a) receiving, (I) a window controller communicatively coupled, (II) over a network, (III) with a plurality of sensors, output signals from two or more photosensors of a plurality of sensors, wherein at least one of the two or more sensors is a photosensor, wherein the network comprises a building management system, and wherein one or more window controllers and the building management system communicate by wireless communication;

(b) determining, with the window controller, a level of tint for a tintable window using the output signals received; and

(c) with the window controller, automatically providing instructions with to change the level of tint of the tintable window to the level of tint determined in (b).

23. A window controller comprising:

(a) a processor or a control circuit coupled with at least one tintable window in a facility, the at least one tintable window being disposed at a position within a range from an interior to an exterior of the facility;

(b) at least one input is (i) communicatively coupled with two or more sensors over a network and (ii) configured to receive output signals from the two or more sensors, wherein one of the two or more sensors is an exterior photosensor proximate to the at least one tintable window, wherein another of the two or more sensors is an interior photosensor proximate to the at least one tintable window, and wherein at least one of the two or more sensors is a photovoltaic cell; and

(c) at least one output configured to control a level of tint in the tintable window, wherein the window controller is configured to (A) determine a level of tint for the tintable window using the output signals received and (B) automatically change the level of tint of the tintable window to the level of tint determined.

24. The window controller of claim 23, wherein the window controller is configured to receive the output signals from any two or more of the sensors through the network.

25. The window controller of claim 23, wherein the network comprises a building management system.

26. The window controller of claim 23, wherein the output signals comprise sensor output signals produced by one or more sensors located outside a room containing the tintable window.

27. The window controller of claim 23, wherein the output signals comprise a sensor output signal from an exterior photosensor located on a roof of the facility.

28. The window controller of claim 27, wherein the exterior photosensor is a photovoltaic cell.

29. The window controller of claim 23, wherein the output signals comprise a sensor output signal from a transmissivity sensor configured to detect light passing through the tintable window.

30. The window controller of claim 23, wherein the output signals comprise a sensor output signal from an exterior photosensor on each side of the facility.

31. The window controller of claim 30, wherein the window controller is further configured to use output signals from the exterior photosensor on each side of the facility to track irradiance and/or illuminance on a respective side of the facility as a sun changes position throughout a day.

32. The window controller of claim 23, wherein the output signals comprise a sensor output signal received via wireless communication.

33. The window controller of claim 23, wherein the window controller is further configured to determine the level of tint for a zone of tintable windows using output signals from sensors associated with a zone of tintable windows.

34. The window controller of claim 23, wherein the at least one input is configured to receive communications over a wireless communications network.

35. The window controller of claim 23, wherein the at least one input is configured to receive communications from a building management system, and wherein the window controller and the building management system are configured to communicate by wireless communication.

36. A window controller comprising:

(a) a processor or a control circuit coupled with at least one tintable window in a facility, the at least one tintable window being disposed at a position within a range from an interior to an exterior of the facility;

(b) at least one input communicatively coupled with two or more sensors over a network and configured to receive output signals from the two or more sensors, wherein the two or more sensors comprise at least two exterior photosensors; and

(c) at least one output configured to control a level of tint in the at least one tintable window, wherein the window controller is configured to

(i) make a comparison of the output signals from the at least two exterior photosensors;

(ii) determine a level of tint for the at least one tintable window based on the comparison; and

(iii) automatically provide instructions to change the level of tint of the at least one tintable window to the level of tint determined.

37. The window controller of claim 36, wherein the at least two exterior photosensors comprise a photovoltaic cell.

38. The window controller of claim 36, wherein the instructions are further configured to cause the processor or the control circuit to determine whether one of the at least two exterior photosensors is shaded, based at least in part on the comparison.

39. A window controller comprising:

(a) a processor or a control circuit coupled with at least one tintable window in a facility, the tintable window disposed at a position within a range from an interior to an exterior of the facility;

(b) at least one input communicatively coupled with (i) two or more sensors and (ii) a master controller and/or an intermediate window controller, over a wireless communication network, the at least one input being configured to (I) receive output signals from the two or more sensors and (II) communications from the master controller and/or the intermediate window controller; and

(c) at least one output configured to control a level of tint in the tintable window, wherein the window controller is configured to automatically control, based at least in part on the output signals and/or the communications, a level of tint in the tintable window.

40. A system comprising:

(a) a building management system;

(b) a lighting control panel;

(c) a network over which the building management system and the lighting control panel communicate; and

(d) a window controller comprising (i) a processor or a control circuit coupled with at least one tintable window in a facility, the tintable window being disposed at a position with a range from an interior to an exterior of the facility;

(ii) at least one input communicatively coupled with, and configured to receive output signals from two or more sensors, the sensors selected from the group consisting of an exterior photosensor, an interior photosensor, an occupancy sensor, an exterior temperature sensor, and a transmissivity sensor that detects light passing through the tintable window from the exterior; and

(iii) at least one output configured to control a level of tint in the tintable window;

wherein the window controller is configured to automatically determine the level of tint for the tintable window by using a relationship between the output signals received and the level of tint.
