Abstract

In one embodiment, a method generally includes a first edge (E) node in a network receiving an encapsulated data packet, wherein the encapsulated data packet comprises an outer header and a data packet, wherein the outer header comprises a first router locator (RLOC) corresponding to the first E node, wherein the data packet comprises an internet protocol (IP) header, and wherein the IP header comprises a destination endpoint identification (EID) corresponding to a host H. The first E node determines whether the host H is attached to the first E node. And in response to the first E node determining the host is attached to the first E node, the first E node forwards the data packet to the host H. The first E node receives a message from another node after the host H detaches from the first E node and reattaches to another E node, wherein the message comprises the destination EID.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

a first edge (E) node in a network receiving an encapsulated data packet, wherein the encapsulated data packet comprises an outer header and a data packet, wherein the outer header comprises a first router locator (RLOC) corresponding to the first E node, wherein the data packet comprises an internet protocol (IP) header, wherein the IP header comprises a destination endpoint identification (EID) corresponding to a host H;

the first E node determining whether the host H is attached to the first E node;

in response to the first E node determining the host is attached to the first E node, the first E node forwarding the data packet to the host H;

the first E node receiving a message from another node after the host H detaches from the first E node and reattaches to another E node, wherein the message comprises the destination EID.

2. The method of claim 1:

wherein the act of determining whether the host H is attached to the first E node comprises the first E node accessing a first memory structure to determine if the destination EID is contained therein;

wherein the first E node adds the destination EID to the first memory structure in response to receiving the message.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

the first edge node receiving a second encapsulated data packet after the first E node receives the message, wherein the second encapsulated data packet comprises a second outer header and a second data packet, wherein the second outer header comprises the first RLOC and a second RLOC, wherein the second data packet comprises a second IP header, wherein the second IP header comprises the destination EID;

the first E node accessing the first memory structure using the destination EID;

in response to determining the first memory structure comprises the destination EID, the first E node forwarding a second message to a second E node, wherein the second RLOC corresponds to the second E node.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the first and second E nodes are contained in a first of several fabric sites of the network, and wherein the other E node is contained in a second of the several fabric sites.

5. The method of claim 4 further comprising:

the second E node sending a map-request message to a first control plane (CP) node of the first fabric site in response to receiving the second message from the first E node, wherein the map-request message comprises the destination EID;

the second E node mapping the destination EID to a third RLOC in a second memory structure in response to receiving a reply from the first CP node, wherein the reply comprises the third RLOC.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising:

the second E node encapsulating the second data packet with a third outer header to create a third encapsulated data packet, wherein the third outer header comprises the third RLOC;

the second E node sending the third encapsulated data packet to a third node, wherein the third RLOC corresponds to the third node.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the third node comprises a third E node contained in the first fabric site.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the third node comprises a border (B) node coupled between the first fabric site and the other fabric site.

9. The method of claim 5 further comprising:

in response to receiving the second message, the second E node encapsulating the second data packet with a third outer header to create a third encapsulated data packet, wherein the third outer header comprises the third RLOC;

the second E node sending the third encapsulated data packet to a third node, wherein the third RLOC corresponds to the third node.

10. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

the first E node receiving a second data packet from a second host H2, wherein the second data packet comprises a second destination EID;

the first E node accessing a second memory structure using the second destination EID to read a second RLOC mapped to the second destination EID;

the first E node encapsulating the second data packet with an outer header, wherein the outer header comprises the second RLOC, wherein the second RLOC corresponds to a border (B) node;

the first E node transmitting the encapsulated second data packet to the B node.

11. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

the first E node receiving a second data packet from a second host H2, wherein the second data packet comprises a second destination EID;

the first E node accessing a second memory structure using the second destination EID;

the first E node sending a map-request to a control plane (CP) node in response to determining that the second memory structure lacks the second destination EID;

in response to receiving a reply from the CP node, the first E node encapsulating the second data packet with a second outer header, wherein the second outer header comprises a second RLOC, wherein the second RLOC corresponds to a border (B) node;

the first E node transmitting the encapsulated second data packet to the B node.

12. A network node comprising:

a network interface circuit;

a memory storing instructions;

a processor operably coupled to the network interface circuit and configured to execute the instructions stored in the memory, wherein the processor implements a method in response to executing the instructions, the method comprising;

receiving an encapsulated data packet, wherein the encapsulated data packet comprises an outer header and a data packet, wherein the outer header comprises a first router locator (RLOC) corresponding to the network node, wherein the data packet comprises an internet protocol (IP) header, wherein the IP header comprises a destination endpoint identification (EID) corresponding to a host H;

determining whether the host H is attached to the network node;

in response to determining the host H is attached to the network node, forward the data packet to the host H;

receiving a message after the host H detaches from the network node and reattaches to another network node, wherein the message comprises the destination EID.

13. The network node of claim 12:

wherein the act of determining whether the host H is attached to the network node comprises accessing a first memory structure to determine if the destination EID is contained therein;

wherein the method further comprises adding the destination EID to the first memory structure in response to receiving the message.

14. The network node of claim 13 wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a second encapsulated data packet after receiving the message, wherein the second encapsulated data packet comprises a second outer header and a second data packet, wherein the second outer header comprises the first RLOC and a second RLOC, wherein the second data packet comprises a second IP header, wherein the second IP header comprises the destination EID;

accessing the first memory structure using the destination EID of the second data packet;

in response to determining the first memory structure comprises the destination EID of the second data packet, forwarding a message to a second network node, wherein the second RLOC corresponds to the second network node.

15. The network node of claim 12 wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a second data packet from a second host H2, wherein the second data packet comprises a second destination EID;

accessing a second memory structure using the second destination EID to read a second RLOC mapped to the second destination EID;

encapsulating the second data packet with another outer header, wherein the other outer header comprises the second RLOC, wherein the second RLOC corresponds to a border (B) node;

transmitting the encapsulated second data packet to the B node.

16. The network node of claim 12 wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a second data packet from a second host H2, wherein the second data packet comprises a second destination EID;

accessing a second memory structure using the second destination EID;

sending a map-request to a control plane (CP) node in response to determining that the second memory structure lacks the second destination EID;

in response to receiving a reply from the CP node, encapsulating the second data packet with a second outer header, wherein the second outer header comprises a second RLOC, wherein the second RLOC corresponds to a border (B) node;

transmitting the encapsulated second data packet to the B node.

17. A non-transitory computer readable memory (CRM) comprising executable instructions, wherein a method is implemented in response to a processor of a first edge (E) node executing the instructions, the method comprising:

accessing a first memory structure in response to the first E node receiving an encapsulated data packet, wherein the encapsulated data packet comprises an outer header and a data packet, wherein the outer header comprises a first router locator (RLOC) corresponding to the first E node, wherein the data packet comprises an internet protocol (IP) header, wherein the IP header comprises a destination endpoint identification (EID) using the destination EID;

in response to determining the first memory structure lacks the destination EID, forwarding the data packet to a host H attached to the first E node, wherein the destination EID corresponds to the host H;

receiving a map-notify message after the host H detaches from the first E node, wherein the map-notify message comprises the destination EID;

adding the destination EID to the first memory structure in response to receiving the map-notify message.

18. The non-transitory CRM of claim 17 wherein the method further comprises:

accessing the first memory structure in response to the first E node receiving a second encapsulated data packet after the first E node receives the map-notify message, wherein the second encapsulated data packet comprises a second outer header and a second data packet, wherein the second outer header comprises the first RLOC and a second RLOC, wherein the second data packet comprises a second IP header, wherein the second IP header comprises the destination EID;

in response to determining the first memory structure comprises the destination EID, forwarding a second message to a second E node, wherein the second RLOC corresponds to the second E node.

19. The non-transitory CRM of claim 18 wherein the method further comprises:

accessing a second memory structure in response to the first E node receiving a second data packet from a second host H2, wherein the second data packet comprises a second destination EID;

using the second destination EID to read a second RLOC mapped to the second destination EID;

encapsulating the second data packet with an outer header, wherein the outer header comprises the second RLOC, wherein the second RLOC corresponds to a border (B) node;

transmitting the encapsulated second data packet to the B node.

20. The non-transitory CRM of claim 19 wherein the method further comprises:

accessing a second memory structure in response to the first E node receiving a second data packet from a second host H2, wherein the second data packet comprises a second destination EID;

sending a map-request to a control plane (CP) node in response to determining that the second memory structure lacks the second destination EID;

in response to receiving a reply from the CP node, encapsulating the second data packet with a second outer header, wherein the second outer header comprises a second RLOC, wherein the second RLOC corresponds to a border (B) node;

transmitting the encapsulated data packet to the B node.
