Abstract

A dialysis system includes a disposable cassette including a flexible sheet and a plurality of dialysis fluid pathways, a plurality of actuators operable with the flexible sheet to direct dialysis fluid through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways, and a controller configured to (i) determine at least one limitation of the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways, (ii) generate a flow schedule indicating how dialysis fluid should be directed through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways in accordance with the at least one limitation, and (iii) control the plurality of actuators so that dialysis fluid is pumped through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways according to the flow schedule.

Claims

1. A dialysis system comprising:

a dialysis machine;

a disposable cassette accepted by the dialysis machine and including a flexible sheet and a plurality of dialysis fluid pathways;

a plurality of actuators provided by the dialysis machine and operable with the flexible sheet to direct dialysis fluid through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways; and

a controller provided by or remote from the dialysis machine, the controller configured to (i) determine a first limitation and a second limitation, wherein the first limitation restricts at least one of (a) pumping from a same solution source using two pumps at a same time, (b) pumping two different solutions using a same pump at one time, or (c) pumping to two different destinations using a same pump at the same time, and wherein the second limitation restricts a different one of (a), (b) or (c), (ii) generate a flow schedule indicating how dialysis fluid should be directed through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways in accordance with at least one of the first or the second limitations, and (iii) control the plurality of actuators so that dialysis fluid is pumped through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways according to the flow schedule.

2. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of actuators includes a plurality of pump actuators.

3. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the controller generates the flow schedule (i) prior to a beginning of therapy or (ii) between pump cycles.

4. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the first limitation or the second limitation includes at least one of:

(i) a volume of a chamber in fluid communication with at least one of the dialysis fluid pathways or (ii) a pushing, pulling or idle state of a chamber in fluid communication with at least one of the dialysis fluid pathways.

5. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein being in accordance with the at least one of the first limitation or the second limitation includes directing dialysis fluid through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways without violating the first limitation or the second limitation.

6. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the first limitation or the second limitation further includes a rule based upon a pumping source or a pumping destination.

7. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the actuators are valve actuators and the flow schedule includes sequencing at least one of the valve actuators.

8. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the flow schedule includes a number of pump strokes of at least one of the plurality of actuators.

9. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the dialysis machine is a peritoneal dialysis machine.

10. A dialysis system comprising:

a dialysis machine;

a disposable cassette accepted by the dialysis machine and including at least one flexible member and a plurality of dialysis fluid pathways;

a plurality of valve actuators provided by the dialysis machine and operable with the at least one flexible member of the disposable cassette to direct dialysis fluid through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways; and

a controller provided by or remote from the dialysis machine, the controller configured to (i) determine a first limitation and a second limitation, wherein the first limitation restricts at least one of (a) pumping from a same solution source using two pumps at a same time, (b) pumping two different solutions using a same pump at one time, or (c) pumping to two different destinations using a same pump at the same time, and wherein the second limitation restricts a different one of (a), (b) or (c), (ii) generate a flow schedule indicating how dialysis fluid should be directed through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways in accordance with at least one of the first or the second limitations, and (iii) control the plurality of valve actuators so that dialysis fluid is pumped through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways according to the flow schedule.

11. The dialysis system of claim 10, wherein the at least one flexible member includes a disposable sheet, the valve actuators operable with the disposable sheet.

12. A dialysis system comprising:

a dialysis machine;

a disposable cassette accepted by the dialysis machine and including at least one flexible member and a plurality of dialysis fluid pathways;

a plurality of pump actuators provided by the dialysis machine and operable with the at least one flexible member of the disposable cassette to direct dialysis fluid through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways; and

a controller provided by or remote from the dialysis machine, the controller configured to (i) determine three limitations wherein each of the three limitations restricts a different one of (a) pumping from a same solution source using two pumps at a same time, (b) pumping two different solutions using a same pump at one time, or (c) pumping to two different destinations using a same pump at the same time, (ii) generate a flow schedule indicating how dialysis fluid should be directed through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways in accordance with the three limitations, and (iii) control the plurality of pump actuators so that dialysis fluid is pumped through the plurality of dialysis fluid pathways according to the flow schedule.

13. The dialysis system of claim 12, wherein the at least one flexible member includes a disposable sheet, the pump actuators operable with the disposable sheet.
