Abstract

A method and system for noninvasive face lifts and deep tissue tightening are disclosed. An exemplary method and treatment system are configured for the imaging, monitoring, and thermal injury to treat the SMAS region. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment, the exemplary method and system are configured for treating the SMAS region by first, imaging of the region of interest for localization of the treatment area and surrounding structures, second, delivery of ultrasound energy at a depth, distribution, timing, and energy level to achieve the desired therapeutic effect, and third to monitor the treatment area before, during, and after therapy to plan and assess the results and/or provide feedback.

Claims

1. A method for tissue shrinkage, the method comprising:

providing an ultrasound probe comprising a housing and a piezoelectric therapy transducer for treating a region of interest,

wherein the piezoelectric therapy transducer is housed within the housing,

wherein the region of interest comprises a collagen fiber and a muscle tissue below a skin surface; and

focusing ultrasound energy from the ultrasound therapy transducer into the region of interest at a frequency of 4 MHz to 15 MHz,

thereby heating the collagen fiber and the muscle tissue in the region of interest to cause shrinkage of the collagen fiber for tightening of the skin surface.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing a piezoelectric ultrasound imaging transducer to image the region of interest, wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound imaging transducer is housed within the ultrasound probe.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the piezoelectric therapy transducer comprises a single active ultrasound therapy piezoelectric element with a portion of a spherical surface with a mechanical focus at a depth under the skin surface.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the piezoelectric therapy transducer further comprises any one of the group consisting of:

a mechanical variable depth, a mechanical dynamically controllable depth, an electronic focusing, an electronic variable depth, and an electronic dynamically controllable depth.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the collagen fiber is located in any of the group consisting of:

a dermal tissue, a connective tissue, a superficial muscular aponeurosis system (SMAS), and an adipose tissue in the region of interest.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the ultrasound probe further comprises a storage system configured for stored information, wherein said stored information is selected from the group consisting of one or more of the following:

probe identification, calibration, and probe usage history.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the collagen fiber is located in the superficial muscular aponeurosis system (SMAS) in the region of interest.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein a portion of the probe housing is configured for acoustic coupling to the skin surface and wherein the heating of the collagen fiber in the region of interest comprises heating the collagen fiber to a temperature between 60°

C. to 90°

C.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring the region of interest during or after therapy to provide feedback to a control system, wherein the control system controls the ultrasound therapy transducer.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising monitoring the region of interest during or after therapy to provide feedback to an operator.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the transmitting ultrasound energy from the ultrasound transducer into the region of interest comprises focusing the ultrasound energy at a depth of between 3 mm to 9 mm below the skin surface.

12. A method for tissue shrinkage, the method comprising:

providing an ultrasound imaging transducer for imaging a region of interest under a skin surface;

wherein the region of interest comprises a plurality of collagen fibers in a muscular fascia;

providing a piezoelectric ultrasound therapy transducer for delivering therapeutic ultrasound energy to a region of interest under a skin surface to heat the plurality of collagen fibers in the muscular fascia with the therapeutic ultrasound energy at a temperature sufficient to shrink the plurality of collagen fibers in the muscular fascia, thereby tightening the skin surface; and

wherein the imaging transducer and the piezoelectric therapy transducer are co-housed within a single ultrasound probe.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the piezoelectric therapy transducer is configured to deliver energy at a frequency in the range of 4 MHz to 15 MHz.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the probe is controlled by a control system comprising a microprocessor and a power supply, wherein the control system is configured to calibrate the ultrasound probe based on calibration data from a storage system.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the ultrasound probe comprising a storage system wherein said stored information is selected from the group consisting of one or more of the following:

probe identification, calibration, and probe usage history.

16. A method for shrinking skin tissue, the method comprising:

providing an ultrasound probe comprising a housing and a piezoelectric ultrasound therapy transducer for treating a region of interest,

wherein the region of interest comprises collagen below a skin surface; and

wherein the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy transducer comprises one of the group consisting of a spherical focus and a cylindrical focus,

wherein ultrasound energy is transmitted from the ultrasound transducer into the region of interest, thereby

heating the collagen in a superficial muscular aponeurosis system (SMAS) tissue in the region of interest to cause shrinkage of the collagen for tightening of the skin surface.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the region of interest further comprises at least one of a connective tissue, a dermis tissue, a muscular fascia, and an adipose tissue.

The method of claim 16, further comprising providing an imaging transducer for imaging the region of interest, wherein the imaging transducer and the therapy transducer are co-housed within the ultrasound probe, and wherein the therapy transducer is configured to deliver energy at a frequency in the range of 4 MHz to 15 MHz.

The method of claim 18, further comprising moving the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy transducer with a motion mechanism connected to the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy transducer, wherein the motion mechanism comprises an encoder for monitoring a position of the piezoelectric ultrasound therapy transducer on the motion mechanism in the probe housing of the ultrasound probe.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the therapy transducer is configured to deliver energy sufficient to heat the region of interest to a temperature between 60°

C. to 90°

C. and wherein the ultrasound probe comprises a storage system with stored information, wherein said stored information is selected from the group consisting of one or more of;

a probe identification, a calibration, and a probe usage history.
