Sailing user interface systems and methods
First Claim
1. A system comprising:
- a logic device configured to receive one or more sensor signals and render a sail chart for a mobile structure, wherein the logic device is adapted to;
receive a heading for the mobile structure;
determine a wind direction for the mobile structure; and
render the sail chart on a display of a user interface, wherein the sail chart indicates the heading of the mobile structure relative to the wind direction and a performance contour for the mobile structure;
wherein the rendering the sail chart comprises rendering the performance contour, a heading vector, and a mobile structure icon substantially within or over the performance contour, wherein the performance contour comprises a polar contour indicating estimated maximum speeds for the mobile structure as a function of the heading of the mobile structure relative to the wind direction, and wherein the heading of the mobile structure relative to the wind direction and the rendered performance contour is indicated, at least in part, by an orientation of the heading vector and/or the mobile structure icon relative to the performance contour rendered in the sail chart.

Abstract
Techniques are disclosed for systems and methods to provide sailing information to users of a mobile structure. A sailing user interface system includes a logic device in communication with a compass or orientation sensor, a wind sensor, and/or a speed sensor. Sensor signals provided by the various sensors are used to determine a heading and a wind direction for the mobile structure, which can be referenced to Magnet North. The wind direction and heading may be used to orient a sail chart rendered by the logic device. The sail chart graphically indicates the heading of the mobile structure relative to the wind direction and a performance contour for the mobile structure. The sail chart may be displayed to a user to refine manual operation of the mobile structure, and the information rendered in the sail chart may be used to autopilot the mobile structure.
