1. A bonus controller coupled to an electronic gaming device, the electronic gaming device having a paytable with winning outcomes and losing outcomes as a set of predefined symbols that are shown on a display;

  • an accepting device configured to accept a physical item associated with a monetary value, the monetary value establishing a credit balance, the credit balance being increasable and decreasable based at least on wagering activity;

    a cashout device configured to receive an input to cause an initiation of a payout associated with the credit balance;

    an actuator configured to apply a wager amount placed for play of a game on the electronic gaming device, the wager amount decreasing the credit balance;

    an actuator configured to generate the input to cause initiation of the payout via the cashout device; and

    an actuator for initiating a game played on the electronic gaming device, the bonus controller comprising;

    a first communication port coupled to the electronic gaming device and structured to receive information related to game play on the electronic gaming device;

    a second communication port operatively coupled to a network that communicates with a personal electronic device associated with a player of a game played on the electronic gaming device;

    at least one computing processor programmed to;

    determine that an outcome of the game and the displayed predefined symbols corresponding to the outcome comprises a winning outcome;

    receive information that determines the physical location of the personal electronic device;

    only when the physical location is in a qualifying location;

    provide information on the second port related to at least one trade of at least two symbols in the displayed predefined symbols that qualify for a bonus award;

    receive information from the second port related to a trade of at least two symbols in the displayed predefined symbols;

    track the traded symbols from the set of predefined symbols;

    add bonus points to a bonus point total if it is determined that the at least two symbols from the predefined symbols comprise one of the winning outcomes in the paytable of the electronic gaming device; and

    grant a bonus to the player of the electronic gaming device when the bonus point total exceeds a threshold.
