Abstract

An apparatus for monitoring a sleep parameter of a user includes an adhesive pad configured to conform to a surface of the user and a flexible element coupled to the adhesive pad. The flexible element includes a conductive fabric, and exhibits a modified electrical property in response to an applied force. The apparatus also includes a power source electrically coupled to the flexible element, and an electrical circuit electrically coupled to the power source and the flexible conductive element. The electrical circuit is configured to detect, during use, a change in an electrical property of the flexible element.

Claims

1. An apparatus, comprising:

an adhesive pad;

a flexible element coupled to the adhesive pad, the flexible element configured to exhibit a modified electrical property in response to an applied force;

an optical sensor assembly coupled to the adhesive pad, the optical sensor assembly including a light source configured to emit light toward the surface of a user, and a photodetector configured to detect reflected light from the surface of the user;

a power source electrically coupled to the flexible element and the optical sensor; and

an electrical circuit electrically coupled to the power source, the flexible element, and the optical sensor,

the apparatus configured to detect, during use and using the optical sensor assembly, a respiratory effort of the user.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the light source is configured to emit one of red light or infrared light.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of light sources including the light source, and a controller configured to control the plurality of light sources.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the electrical circuit is configured to cause the light emission from the light source in one of a continuous manner or a predetermined pattern.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the flexible element is in a neutral stress state prior to being coupled to the flexible element, and is in one of a compressed state or a tensile state upon being coupled to the adhesive pad.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, configured to detect the respiratory effort of the user using at least one of an accelerometer or a piezoresistive element.

The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the one of the compressed state or the tensile state is a first stress state, the electrical circuit configured to detect the change in the electrical property of the flexible element during a transition from the first stress state to a second stress state different from the first stress state.

The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the one of the compressed state or the tensile state is a first stress state, the electrical circuit configured to detect the change in the electrical property of the flexible element during a transition from the neutral stress state to a second stress state different from the first stress state.

The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the one of the compressed state or the tensile state is a first stress state, and during use, the flexible element transitions from the first stress state, through the neutral stress state, to a second stress state different from the first stress state, in response to an exhalation of the user.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a communication interface configured to connect with a portable electronic device.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the change in the electrical property of the flexible element is responsive to a tension applied to the flexible element during use of the apparatus.

12. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least one of:

a motion sensor configured to monitor a position of at least a portion of the user;

a pulse oximeter configured to measure an oxygen saturation level of the user;

or

a microphone configured to detect ambient noises during use of the apparatus.

13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the flexible element is a first flexible element, the apparatus further comprising a second flexible element not configured to exhibit a modified electrical property in response to an applied force.

14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the flexible element is a first flexible element, the apparatus further comprising a second flexible element and a third flexible element.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the first flexible element extends from the adhesive pad to the second flexible element, the second flexible element extends from the first flexible element to the third flexible element, and the third flexible element extends from the second flexible element to the adhesive pad.

16. An apparatus, comprising:

an adhesive pad;

a flexible element coupled to the adhesive pad, the flexible element configured to exhibit a modified electrical property in response to an applied force;

a power source electrically coupled to the flexible element; and

an electrical circuit electrically coupled to the power source and the flexible element, the apparatus configured to detect, during use and based on an optical signal, a respiratory effort of the user.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising an accelerometer, the apparatus further configured to detect the respiratory effort of the user based on data from at least one of the accelerometer or the flexible element.
