Abstract

A method of controlling tint of a tintable window to account for occupant comfort in a room of a building. The tintable window is between the interior and exterior of the building. The method predicts a tint level for the tintable window at a future time based on a penetration depth of direct sunlight through the tintable window into the room at the future time and space type in the room. The method also provides instructions over a network to transition tint of the tintable window to the tint level.

Claims

1. A method of controlling a tintable window located between an interior and exterior of a building, the method comprising:

using one or more of (i) a first logic module based at least in part on a calculated penetration depth of direct sunlight through the tintable window, (ii) a second logic module based at least in part on a calculated irradiance, and (iii) a third logic module based on a detected irradiance, to determine a tint level for the tintable window;

using override logic to determine whether to transition to an override tint level; and

providing instructions to transition the tintable window to the tint level or to the override tint level.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the calculated penetration depth is based on a calculated sun position at a future time and a configuration of the tintable window.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the calculated sun position is based on longitude and latitude of the building and the future time comprises a day of a year and a time of the day.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the future time is at least a preset interval after a current time, and wherein the preset interval is an estimated duration of tint transitioning of the tintable window.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first logic module determines the tint level for the tintable window based at least in part on a space type associated with occupant comfort and an acceptance angle of the tintable window.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the calculated irradiance is based at least in part on a predicted clear sky irradiance.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein using the second logic module based at least in part on the calculated irradiance that comprises incrementally increasing the tint level determined by the first logic module until the calculated irradiance is at most a maximum irradiance.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the maximum irradiance is based at least in part on a location of the building.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the detected irradiance is based on a signal received from a sensor configured to detect light in a visible range of wavelengths, the sensor located on a roof of the building or at or near the tintable window.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein using the third logic module based at least in part on the detected irradiance that comprises incrementally decreasing the tint level determined by the second logic module until the detected irradiance is less than the calculated irradiance.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the calculated irradiance and the detected irradiance are for inside a room into which sun light enters through the tintable window.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein (a) the calculated irradiance is for outside the building and (b) the detected irradiance is for inside a room into which sun light enters through the tintable window.

The method of claim 1, wherein (a) the calculated irradiance is for inside the building and (b) the detected irradiance is based on a signal received from a sensor configured to detect light in a visible range of wavelengths, the sensor located on a roof of the building or at or near the tintable window.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the circuitry is a third circuitry, wherein a first circuitry is used to implement one or more of the first logic module, and wherein a second circuitry is used to implement the override logic.

15. A method of controlling tint of a tintable window located between an interior and exterior of a building, the method comprising:

(a) using a first logic module to determine a tint level for the tintable window based on a calculated penetration of direct sunlight through the tintable window;

(b) using a second logic module to determine whether to modify the tint level from the first logic module based on a calculated irradiance in a room with the tintable window;

(c) using a third logic module to determine whether to modify the tint level from the second logic module based on a detected irradiance; and

(d) providing instructions to transition the tintable window to the tint level.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising using override logic to determine whether to modify the tint level by applying an override tint level.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising using the first logic module (a) to determine a clear sky irradiance at or near the tintable window, and (b) to calculate an inside irradiance in the room based on the clear sky irradiance.

18. The method of claim 15, further comprising using the second logic module to modify the tint level from the first logic module by incrementally increasing the tint level until the calculated irradiance is at most a maximum irradiance.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the maximum irradiance is based at least in part on a location of the building.

20. The method of claim 15, further comprising using the third logic module to modify the tint level determined by the second logic module by incrementally decreasing the tint level until the detected irradiance is less than the inside irradiance calculated.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the detected irradiance is based on a signal received from a sensor configured to detect light in a visible range of wavelengths, the sensor located on a roof of the building or at or near the tintable window.

31. The method of claim 15, wherein the first logic module is used to determine the tint level for the tintable window based at least in part on (a) a space type associated with occupant comfort and (b) an acceptance angle of the tintable window.

22. A controller for controlling tint of a tintable window located between an interior and exterior of a building, the controller comprising:

at least one processor configured to determine a tint level at a future time for the tintable window by;

(i) using a first logic module to determine the tint level based on a calculated penetration of direct sunlight through the tintable window, (ii) using a second logic module to determine whether to modify the tint level from the first logic module based on a calculated irradiance in a room with the tintable window at the future time, and (iii) using a third logic module to determine whether to modify the tint level from the second logic module based on a detected irradiance; and

circuitry in communication with the at least one processor and iwth the tintable window, the circuitry configured to receive a signal from the at least one processor and apply voltage and/or current to bus bars of the tintable window to transition the tintable window to the tint level.

23. The controller of claim 22, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to use an override value to modify the tint level after an override mechanism is received.

24. The controller of claim 22, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to use the first logic module to determine the tint level for the tintable window based at least in part on a space type associated with occupant comfort and an acceptance angle of the tintable window.

25. The controller of claim 22, wherein the at least one processor is further configured (a) to use the second logic module to determine a clear sky irradiance and (b) to calculate irradiance in the room based at least in part on the clear sky irradiance.

26. The controller of claim 22, wherein the at least in one processor is further configured to use the second logic module to modify the tint level from the first logic module by incrementally increasing the tint level until the calculated irradiance at most a maximum irradiance.

27. The controller of claim 26, wherein the maximum irradiance is based at least in part on a location of the building.

28. The window controller of claim 22, wherein the detected irradiance is based on a signal received from a sensor configured to detect light in a visible range of wavelengths, the sensor located on a roof of the building or at or near the tintable window.

The window controller of claim 22, wherein the at least one processor is further configured to use the third logic module to modify the tint level determined by the second logic module by incrementally decreasing the tint level until the detected irradiance is less than the calculated irradiance.

30. The window controller of claim 29, wherein the detected irradiance is based on a signal received from a sensor configured to detect light in a visible range of wavelengths, the sensor located on a roof of the building or at or near the tintable window.
