1. A method performed by a processor, comprising:

  • acquiring a first digital image of at least a portion of a physical object, the physical object having an uncertain provenance;

    acquiring a third-party assertion of authenticity of the physical object on a date certain;

    forming a first digital fingerprint based on an analysis of the first digital image, wherein the first digital fingerprint is based on one or more natural structures of the physical object;

    forming a first database record having first data, the first data including authenticity information associated with the third-party assertion of authenticity and the first digital fingerprint;

    storing the first database record in a database;

    at a time subsequent to the date certain, acquiring a second digital image of at least a portion of a target object;

    forming a second digital fingerprint based on an analysis of the second digital image, wherein the second digital fingerprint is responsive to one or more natural structures of the target object;

    searching the database for a record having a stored digital fingerprint that matches the second digital fingerprint; and

    based on a determination that the first digital fingerprint of the first database record matches the second digital fingerprint, updating the first database record to indicate that the target object is the physical object.
