Preserving a level of confidence of authenticity of an object
First Claim
1. A method performed by a processor, comprising:
- acquiring a first digital image of at least a portion of a physical object, the physical object having an uncertain provenance;
acquiring a third-party assertion of authenticity of the physical object on a date certain;
forming a first digital fingerprint based on an analysis of the first digital image, wherein the first digital fingerprint is based on one or more natural structures of the physical object;
forming a first database record having first data, the first data including authenticity information associated with the third-party assertion of authenticity and the first digital fingerprint;
storing the first database record in a database;
at a time subsequent to the date certain, acquiring a second digital image of at least a portion of a target object;
forming a second digital fingerprint based on an analysis of the second digital image, wherein the second digital fingerprint is responsive to one or more natural structures of the target object;
searching the database for a record having a stored digital fingerprint that matches the second digital fingerprint; and
based on a determination that the first digital fingerprint of the first database record matches the second digital fingerprint, updating the first database record to indicate that the target object is the physical object.

Abstract
Apparatuses and methods associated with preserving a level of confidence of authenticity of an object are disclosed herein. In embodiments, a method includes acquiring first information corresponding to a physical object; identifying first authentication data based on the first information; initializing a database record associated with the physical object responsive to identifying the first authentication data; determining whether the first authentication data corresponds to original provenance for the physical object; in response to determining that the first authentication data does not correspond to original provenance for the physical object, acquire and store in the database record first record data including authenticity information available in association with identification of the first authentication data; in response to determining that the first authentication data does correspond to original provenance for the physical object, retaining second record data in the database record. Other embodiments may be disclosed or claimed.

11. A mobile device, comprising:
-
a memory; an image acquisition device arranged to capture a digital image of at least a portion of a target physical object, the target physical object having an uncertain provenance; and a processor, the processor arranged to execute instructions stored in the memory, wherein execution of at least some of the instructions cause the processor to; retrieve the digital image of at least the portion of the target physical object; analyze the digital image; form a target digital fingerprint based on the analysis of the first digital image, wherein the target digital fingerprint is responsive to one or more natural structures of the target physical object; query a database to identify a database record having a stored digital fingerprint that matches the target digital fingerprint; and based on a successful identification of the database record having the stored digital fingerprint that matches the target digital fingerprint, update the database record with an indication of the target physical object and time information associated with the capture of the digital image. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14, 15)

16. A system, comprising:
-
a database arranged to store a plurality of database records, various ones of the plurality of records including; a first digital image of at least a portion of a physical object, the physical object having an uncertain provenance; information indicating a third-party assertion of authenticity of the respective physical object on a date certain; and a first digital fingerprint based on an analysis of the first digital image, wherein the first digital fingerprint is responsive to one or more natural structures of the physical object; a memory; an image processing device arranged to execute instructions stored in the memory, wherein execution of at least some of the instructions cause the imaging processing device to; analyze a target digital image of at least the portion of a target physical object; form a target digital fingerprint based on the analysis of the target digital image, wherein the target digital fingerprint is responsive to one or more natural structures of the target physical object; query the database to identify a database record having a stored digital fingerprint that matches the target digital fingerprint; and based on a successful identification of the database record having the stored digital fingerprint that matches the target digital fingerprint, update the database record with an indication of the target physical object and time information associated with the capture of the digital image. - View Dependent Claims (17, 18, 19, 20)
