1. An electrical impedance tomography (EIT) imaging device, comprising:

  • an electrode array comprising a plurality of electrodes for measuring an impedance distribution for investigating lung ventilation and perfusion, the plurality of electrodes of the electrode array arranged in or on a belt structure defining an observation plane;

    a first sensor mechanically coupled to the electrode array of the EIT imaging device for determining a spatial orientation of the observation plane with respect to a gravity vector, wherein the EIT imaging instrument is adapted for determining the spatial orientation of the observation plane substantially simultaneously with the measurement of the impedance distribution; and

    a computing device for presenting electrical impedance tomography images of the observation plane with respect to the gravity vector, the computing device configured for presenting zones with open and well aerated alveoli, zones with unstable alveoli in which their opening and closing occurs during a respiratory cycle and zones with collapsed alveoli, and the computing device configured for presenting a variation in a degree or level of zone expression within lungs of a patient with respect to the gravity vector after changing a body position of the patient or after a treatment.
