1. A computer-implemented method for encouraging team performance in a multiplayer game environment in a game for multiple players where the multiple players form the team, the method being implemented in a computer having a processor and a random access memory, wherein the processor is in data communication with a display and with a storage unit, the method comprising:

  • for each of the multiple players playing a video game in the multiplayer video game environment, identifying cooperative actions and uncooperative actions, wherein said cooperative and uncooperative actions include at least one of healing another player, sharing a weapon, saving another player'"'"'s life, killing a teammate, working with a teammate to kill an enemy, working with a teammate to attack an enemy, completing level objectives alone, completing level objectives with a teammate, complimenting, praising or positively gesturing to teammates, giving items to another player, working with another player to solve a puzzle, or working with another player to overcome an obstacle;

    for each of the identified cooperative actions, assigning a value indicative of a degree of cooperation;

    for each of the identified uncooperative actions, assigning a value indicative of a degree of a lack of cooperation;

    determining, by the computer and for each player of the multiple players, a cooperation metric representative of the values indicative of the degree of cooperation and the degree of the lack of cooperation;

    assessing, by the computer, an overall team metric comprising cooperation metrics provided collectively by the multiple players that form the team, wherein the overall team metric is determined based on a function of all of the cooperation metrics provided by each of the multiple players; and

    generating, by the computer, a visual representation of team performance based on the overall team metric.
