Abstract

In general, this disclosure describes method of capturing and storing CO₂ on a vehicle. The method includes contacting an vehicle exhaust gas with one or more of a first metal organic framework (MOF) composition sufficient to separate CO₂ from the exhaust gas, contacting the separated CO₂ with one or more of a second MOF composition sufficient to store the CO₂ and wherein the one or more first MOF composition comprises one or more SIFSIX-n-M MOF and wherein M is a metal and n is 2 or 3. Embodiments also describe an apparatus or system for capturing and storing CO₂ onboard a vehicle.

Claims

1. A method of capturing and storing CO₂ on a vehicle, comprising:

contacting vehicle exhaust gas with a first metal organic framework (MOF) composition at a first condition sufficient to capture CO₂ from the vehicle exhaust gas, wherein the first MOF composition comprises one or more SIFSIX-n-MOFs, where M is a metal and n is 2 or 3; and

adjusting the first condition to a second condition sufficient to store the CO₂ using a second MOF composition.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the vehicle exhaust gas further comprises N₂, water vapor, or combinations thereof.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein M is selected from Cu, Zn, Co, Mn, Mo, Cr, Fe, Ca, Ba, Cs, Pb, Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh, or Cd.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first MOF compositions comprises bidentate N-donor organic ligands.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first MOF composition comprises ligands selected from pyridine, 4,4′

-Bipyridin, pyrazine, pyrimidine, pyridazine, triazine, thiazole, oxazole, pyrrole, imidazole, pyrazole, triazole, oxadiazole, thiadiazole, quinoline, benzoxazole, benzimidazole, 1,4-Diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO), or 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)acetylene (dpa).

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first condition is a temperature in the range of about 298 K to about 338 K.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first condition is a pressure of about 0.15 bar.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the first condition is a pressure of about 1 bar.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the first condition is a mass of the first MOF composition.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the second condition is a temperature in the range of about 298 K to about 308 K.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the second condition is a pressure in the range of about 25 bar to about 70 bar.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the second condition is a mass of the second MOF composition.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the second MOF composition comprises at least one metal organic framework that is different from the first MOF composition.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the second MOF composition comprises one or more of a soc-MOF, rht-MOF, ZMOF, tbo-MOF, or SIFSIX-n-M MOF.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the second MOF composition comprises a soc-MOF analogue.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the second MOF composition comprises a MOF selected from MOF-200, MOF-177, rht-MOF-9, and tbo-MOF-2.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein the contacting proceeds for one or more cycles before the adjusting.
