1. An articulated hitch coupler comprising:
- a towing vehicle hitching structure having an interior;
a towed trailer mounting structure having an interior;
a plurality of linkage arms coupling the towing vehicle hitching structure to the towed trailer mounting structure, wherein the plurality of linkage arms comprises;
a first upper linkage arm pivotably connected to the towing vehicle hitching structure interior and pivotably connected to the towed trailer mounting structure interior, anda first lower linkage arm pivotably connected to the towing vehicle hitching structure interior and pivotably connected to the towed trailer mounting structure interior; and
means for limiting linkage arm rotation;
wherein the plurality of linkage arms is configured to permit up and down vertical displacement of the towed trailer mounting structure relative to the towing vehicle hitching structure while maintaining a towed trailer in a generally upright orientation relative to a towing vehicle during vertical transitions of the towed trailer while being towed; and
further wherein the plurality of linkage arms is configured to prevent lateral angular displacement of the towed trailer mounting structure relative to the towing vehicle hitching structure while the towed trailer is being towed,wherein the towed trailer comprises pivoting ground-engaging wheels or casters below a platform.

Abstract
An articulated coupler permits vertical displacement of a towed vehicle relative to a towing vehicle while preventing lateral or horizontal displacement of the towed vehicle relative to the towing vehicle. Multiple linkage arms provide coupling for special configuration towed vehicles such as short wheel-mounted lifts that experience torsional forces due to the presence and absence of loads on the lift.
