Abstract

Full-color pixel arrangements for use in devices such as OLED displays are provided, in which multiple sub-pixels are configured to emit different colors of light, with each sub-pixel having a different optical path length than some or all of the other sub-pixels within the pixel.

Claims

1. A full-color pixel arrangement for an OLED device, the full-color pixel arrangement comprising:

a first sub-pixel comprising a first emissive region of a first color and having a first optical path length;

a second sub-pixel comprising a second emissive region of the first color, the second sub-pixel having a second optical path length different than the first optical path length; and

a third sub-pixel comprising a third emissive region of a second color;

wherein the full-color pixel arrangement comprises emissive regions of exactly two different colors; and

wherein the second emissive region provides emission for the second sub-pixel without any intervening color altering layers.

2. The full-color pixel arrangement of claim 1, wherein the second emissive region is a yellow emissive region.

3. The full-color pixel arrangement of claim 2, wherein the yellow emissive region comprises a red emissive material and a green emissive material.

4. The full-color pixel arrangement of claim 1, wherein the second emissive region is a blue emissive region.

13. The full-color pixel arrangement of claim 1, claim 5, or claim 10, wherein the first sub-pixel comprises a first non-emissive layer having a first thickness and the second sub-pixel comprises a second non-emissive layer of the same type first non-emissive layer and having a second thickness different from the first thickness.

14. The full-color pixel arrangement of claim 13, wherein the first and second non-emissive layers are hole transport layers (HTLs), electron blocking layers (EBLs), or hole injection layers (HILs).

15. An OLED device comprising the full-color pixel arrangement of claim 1, claim 5, or claim 10.

16. The OLED device of claim 15, wherein the OLED device is a display having a resolution of at least 300 dpi, 400 dpi, 500 dpi or 600 dpi.

17. The OLED device of claim 15, wherein the OLED device is a display having a resolution of at least 700 dpi.

18. The OLED device of claim 15, wherein the device is a type selected from the group consisting of:

a wearable device, a flat panel display, a computer monitor, a medical monitor, a television, a billboard, a light for interior or exterior illumination, a signal, a color tunable or color temperature tunable lighting source, a heads-up display, a fully transparent display, a flexible display, a 3D display, a laser printer, a telephone, a cell phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a laptop computer, a digital camera, a camcorder, a viewfinder, a micro-display, a vehicle, a large area wall, a theater or stadium screen, and a sign.

5. A full-color pixel arrangement for an OLED device, the full-color pixel arrangement comprising:

a first sub-pixel comprising a first emissive region of a first color and having a first optical path length, the first emissive region comprising an emissive layer containing a plurality of emissive materials disposed within the emissive layer;

a second sub-pixel comprising a second emissive region of the first color, the second sub-pixel having a second optical path length different than the first optical path length; and

a third sub-pixel comprising a third emissive region of a second color;

wherein the full-color pixel arrangement comprises emissive regions of exactly two different colors.

6. The full-color pixel arrangement of claim 5, wherein the first emissive region comprises at least a red emissive material and a green emissive material.

7. The full-color pixel arrangement of claim 5, further comprising at least one color altering layer disposed over the second emissive region.

8. The full-color pixel arrangement of claim 7, wherein the at least one color altering layer comprises a red color altering layer, a green color altering layer, or both.

9. The full-color pixel arrangement of claim 5, wherein the second color comprises light blue or deep blue.

10. A full-color pixel arrangement for an OLED device, the full-color pixel arrangement comprising:

a first sub-pixel comprising a first emissive region of a first color and having a first optical path length;

a second sub-pixel comprising a second emissive region of the first color, the second sub-pixel having a second optical path length different than the first optical path length; and

a third sub-pixel comprising a third emissive region of a second color;

wherein the full-color pixel arrangement comprises emissive regions of exactly two different colors; and

wherein at least a first portion of the second emissive region is disposed in a stack overlapping at least a portion of the first emissive region, and wherein the stack including the first portion of the second emissive region produces white light when the stack is operated in the OLED device.

11. The full-color pixel arrangement of claim 10, further comprising at least one color altering layer disposed over the first portion of the second emissive region.

12. The full-color pixel arrangement of claim 10, wherein the third emissive region comprises a light blue or deep blue emissive material.

19. A method of fabricating a full-color pixel arrangement for an OLED device, the method comprising:

fabricating a patterned layer having a pattern over a first area of a substrate, the pattern defining at least two sub-pixel regions over the substrate;

depositing, via an organic vapor jet printing (OVJP) process, a first emissive material over the at least two sub-pixel regions;

depositing a second emissive material over a second area of the substrate;

fabricating an electrode layer over the first emissive material and the second emissive material;

wherein the at least two sub-pixel regions have different optical path lengths between the substrate and the electrode layer.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the second emissive material is deposited via an OVJP process.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the second area does not overlap the first area.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein the patterned layer is a layer deposited over an electrode layer disposed over the substrate and below the patterned layer.

23. The method of claim 19, wherein the patterned layer is an electrode layer.
