Abstract

The embodied invention is a method of removing intraperitoneal fat by using a freezing cryoprobe and inserting it into the abdominal cavity. The freezing cryoprobe is covered by a vacuum sleeve which provides for a method for abdominal fat removal once the cells are damaged. A multi-step surgical procedure is used to freeze, irrigate, and remove the destroyed fat tissue. Also, an ultrasonic transmitter is inserted into an outer cryoprobe sheath to assess organ position with the advantage of an internal transmitter which greatly aids in organ identification.

Claims

1. A surgical method used to remove abdominal fat comprising:

A) providing;

a) a cryoprobe further comprising;

i) an insulated cryoprobe tube with a closed distal operating tip,

ii) said distal operating tip is non-insulated,

iii) said distal operating tip comprises a cryocooler operable to cool to cryoablation temperatures of intraperitoneal fat surrounding said distal operating tip,

iv) said cryoprobe tube incorporates a coaxial cryogen exhaust chamber for exhausting cold cryogen from said cryocooler, and

v) a coaxial cryogen gas delivery tube inside said cryoprobe tube,

b) said outer vacuum sleeve incorporates a plurality of perforations at the distal end,

c) said outer vacuum sleeve is coaxial to said cryoprobe and operable to move relative to said cryoprobe, and

d) an ultrasonic transmitter configured to fit coaxially inside said outer vacuum sleeve and move relative to said outer vacuum sleeve,

B) positioning said ultrasonic transmitter inside said vacuum sleeve,

C) positioning said vacuum sleeve with said ultrasonic transmitter in an abdomen and determining organ position,

D) removing said ultrasonic transmitter from said vacuum sleeve,

E) positioning said cryoprobe inside said vacuum sleeve,

F) positioning said cryoprobe and said vacuum sleeve in intraperitoneal fat,

G) operating said cryocooler to freeze to create a frozen intraperitoneal volume,

H) withdrawing said cryocooler from said vacuum sleeve,

I) allowing said frozen peritoneal volume to thaw to a decomposed liquid,

J) irrigating said decomposed liquid by injecting an irrigating solution through said vacuum sleeve,

K) utilizing at least a partial vacuum to substantially remove said decomposed liquid through said vacuum sleeve, and

L) whereby intraperitoneal fat is removed without organ damage.

2. The surgical method according to claim 1, wherein a computerized tomography scan is used prior to surgery to identify quadrant and organ dimensions.

3. The surgical method according to claim 1, wherein said irrigating solution includes sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, lidocaine, and epinephrine.
