Lithium ion battery
First Claim
1. A lithium ion battery, comprising:
- at least two support members, each of the at least two support members including a plurality of cavities defined by cavity surfaces, wherein each of the plurality of cavities is configured to receive a lithium ion core member through a cavity opening;
a plurality of lithium ion core members, each of the plurality of lithium ion core members (i) including an anode, a cathode, a separator positioned between the anode and the cathode, and electrolyte, and (ii) positioned in one of the plurality of cavities of the support member, anda hermetically sealed enclosure that (i) defines or includes a shared wall positioned between two of the at least two support members to define two compartmentalized regions, and (ii) defines a first shared atmosphere region within a first of the two compartmentalized regions and a second shared atmosphere region with a second of the two compartmentalized regions;
wherein each of the lithium ion core members is surrounded by a cavity surface of one of the plurality of cavities along its length such that electrolyte is prevented from escaping the cavity within which it is contained; and
wherein the anode, cathode and electrolyte of each ion core member communicates with the first shared atmosphere region or the second shared atmosphere region through a cavity opening when positioned in a cavity of the at least two support members.

Abstract
A multi-core lithium ion battery includes a sealed enclosure and a support member disposed within the sealed enclosure. The sealed enclosure may further include at least two support members housed within individual compartments, separated by shared wall(s). The support member(s) includes a plurality of cavities and a plurality of lithium ion core members which are disposed within the plurality of cavities. The battery may further include a plurality of cavity liners, each of which is positioned between a corresponding one of the lithium ion core members and a surface of a corresponding one of the cavities. The hermetically sealed enclosure may be formed using a clamshell configuration. Structures may be included in proximity to or in contact with the lithium ion core members to control gas/fluid flow therefrom.
