1. A linear reciprocating engine, comprising:

  • a cylinder having a first combustion chamber at a first end of the cylinder and a second combustion chamber at an opposing second end of the cylinder;

    a piston slidably mounted within the cylinder;

    a piston rod having a passageway extending through the piston into both the first and second combustion chambers;

    at least one first opening in a first side of the piston rod configured to move into and out of the first combustion chamber to selectively communicate gas to the first combustion chamber; and

    at least one second opening in a second side of the piston rod configured to move into and out of the second combustion chamber to selectively communicate gas to the second combustion chamber,wherein the piston is slidable between a first position where the first opening is outside the first combustion chamber and the second opening is inside the second combustion chamber, and a second position where the first opening is inside the first combustion chamber and the second opening is outside the second combustion chamber.
