1. A method performed in a network node for allocating and transmitting at least a predetermined number of independently faded Mobility Reference Signals (MRS) for a wireless communication device to measure beam signal quality in a wireless communication network, wherein the independently faded MRS are transmitted in a MRS field spanning no more than a maximum frequency span limit, Fmax, in a frequency dimension and spanning no more than a maximum mobility measurement session length limit, Tmax, in a time dimension, the method comprising:

  • obtaining information representing a frequency diversity of a channel between the network node and the wireless communication device, a time diversity of the channel between the network node and the wireless communication device, and an antenna spatial diversity of the wireless communication device;

    using the obtained information to evaluate each candidate MRS pattern in a set of candidate MRS patterns to ascertain, for each respective candidate MRS pattern in the set of candidate MRS patterns, a respective number of independently faded MRS, a frequency span in the frequency dimension, and a time length in the time dimension, wherein each respective candidate MRS pattern is a unique combination of a number, Nf, of subcarriers separated by a spacing Df in the frequency dimension and a number, Nt, of symbols, separated by a spacing Dt in the time dimension;

    selecting one of the candidate MRS patterns out of the set of candidate MRS patterns that satisfies;

    a total number of independently faded MRS in the candidate MRS pattern is greater than or equal to the predetermined number of independently faded MRS;

    a frequency span of the candidate MRS pattern is less than or equal to the maximum frequency span limit, Fmax, in the frequency dimension; and

    a session length of the candidate MRS pattern is less than or equal to the maximum mobility measurement session length limit, Tmax, in the time dimension;

    signalling the selected MRS pattern to the wireless communication device; and

    transmitting the MRS according to the selected MRS pattern.
