Abstract

An example particle therapy system includes a particle accelerator to output a particle beam having a spot size; a scanning system for the particle accelerator to scan the particle beam in two dimensions across at least part of a treatment area of an irradiation target; and an adaptive aperture between the scanning system and the irradiation target. The adaptive aperture includes structures that are movable relative to the irradiation target to approximate a shape to trim part of the treatment area. The part of the treatment area has a size that is based on an area of the spot size.

Claims

1. A particle therapy system comprising:

a particle accelerator to output a particle beam;

at least one scanning magnet to move the particle beam relative to at least part of an irradiation target in a patient;

a device that is between the particle accelerator and the patient, the device comprising multiple leaves that are configurable to define an edge of the device, the multiple leaves being dynamically reconfigurable during movement of the particle beam within a beam field of the scanning magnet to change a shape of the edge, the edge being movable between at least a portion of the particle beam and the patient so that a first part of the particle beam on a first side of the edge is at least partly blocked by the multiple leaves and so that a second part of the particle beam on a second side of the edge is allowed to pass to the irradiation target; and

one or more processing devices to receive information about a fixed aperture from a treatment planning system and to translate the information about the fixed aperture to different configurations of the multiple leaves to define at least one edge of the device that mimics at least part of the fixed aperture during movement of the particle beam within the beam field.

2. The particle therapy system of claim 1, wherein the configurations comprise a series of positions for the multiple leaves.

The particle therapy system of claim 1, wherein the configurations comprise a series of positions for the multiple leaves, at least one of the series of positions defining the at least one edge to trim an individual spot of the particle beam, the individual spot of the particle beam comprising a cross-sectional area of the particle beam.

4. The particle therapy system of claim 1, wherein the multiple leaves are movable in more than one dimension, and wherein the one or more processing devices are configured to receive information about a speed of movement of the particle beam and to move the multiple leaves based on the speed.

The particle therapy system of claim 1, wherein the one or more processing devices are configured to receive information about a target cumulative dose of radiation to be applied to locations on the irradiation target and to control the particle therapy system to apply the target cumulative dose.

6. The particle therapy system of claim 1, further comprising:

an energy degrader that is between the at least one scanning magnet and the patient, at least part of the energy degrader being movable into a path of the particle beam to receive the particle beam, the energy degrader comprising a material that allows the particle beam to pass through the energy degrader thereby reducing an energy of the particle beam, the energy degrader comprising multiple plates.

The particle therapy system of claim 1, wherein the one or more processing devices are configured to receive, from the treatment planning system, parameters comprising one or more of a shape of the irradiation target, a number of layers of the irradiation target to be irradiated with the particle beam, an irradiation dose for positions at different layers, and numbers of times different layers of the irradiation target are to be irradiated by the particle beam;

and

wherein the one or more processing devices are configured to control operation of the device based on at least one of the parameters.

17. The particle therapy system of claim 1, wherein the particle accelerator comprises a synchrocyclotron.

18. The particle therapy system of claim 17, wherein the synchrocyclotron comprises:

a particle source for holding ionized plasma, the particle source being in a cavity and comprising two parts that are separated at an acceleration region;

a voltage source to provide a radio frequency (RF) voltage to the cavity to accelerate particles from the ionized plasma at the acceleration region, the voltage source being configured to sweep the RF voltage over a frequency range in a cycle;

coils to pass electrical current to generate a magnetic field corresponding to the electrical current, the magnetic field for causing the particles to move orbitally within the cavity at an energy that corresponds to the electrical current, the magnetic field being at least 4 Tesla in a center of the cavity;

magnetic pole pieces comprising ferromagnetic material that border the cavity; and

an extraction channel to receive the particles from the cavity and to output the particles received to the at least one scanning magnet;

wherein the energy of the particles that are output from the cavity is in a range that is between about 100 MeV and about 300 MeV.

19. The particle therapy system of claim 17, wherein the synchrocyclotron comprises:

a voltage source to provide a radio frequency (RF) voltage to a cavity to accelerate particles from a particle source, the voltage source being configured to sweep the RF voltage over a frequency range in a cycle;

coils to pass electrical current having one of multiple values and to generate a magnetic field corresponding to the electrical current, the magnetic field for causing the particles to move orbitally within the cavity at an energy that corresponds to the electrical current, the magnetic field being at least 4 Tesla in a center of the cavity; and

an extraction channel to receive the particles from the cavity and to output the particles received from the cavity to the at least one scanning magnet, the particles that are output from the cavity having an energy that corresponds to the electrical current;

wherein the synchrocyclotron is configured to enable setting of the electrical current to one of the multiple values, each of the multiple values corresponding to a different energy at which particles are output from the cavity;

wherein the energy of the particles that are output from the cavity is variable in a range that is between about 100 MeV and about 300 MeV; and

wherein the voltage source is configured to sweep the RF voltage over different frequency ranges, each different frequency range corresponding to each different energy at which the particles are output from the cavity.

The particle therapy system of claim 1, wherein the one or more processing devices are configured (i) to control current through the scanning magnet in order to produce uninterrupted movement of the particle beam across the at least part of the irradiation target, (ii) for positions at which the particle beam delivers a dose of radiation from the particle beam, to store information identifying a location and an amount of dose delivered, (iii) to compare a cumulative dose delivered at each position to a target cumulative dose, and (iv) if the cumulative dose does not match the target cumulative dose at specific positions, to control the current in order to move the particle beam so as to deliver additional dose to the specific positions.

8. A particle therapy system comprising:

a device to configure an opening through which at least part of a particle beam passes to an irradiation target in a patient, the device comprising;

a first carriage that is movable in a first dimension;

second carriages that are coupled to the first carriage and therefore movable in the first dimension along with the first carriage, each of the second carriages being configured also to move in a second dimension that is different from the first dimension, each of the second carriages comprising;

multiple leaves comprised of material that blocks passage of the particle beam, the multiple leaves being configurable to define an edge that is movable into a path of the particle beam such that a first part of the particle beam on a first side of the edge is blocked by the multiple leaves and such that a second part of the particle beam on a second side of the edge is not blocked by the multiple leaves, the edge defining at least part of the opening, the multiple leaves being dynamically reconfigurable during movement of the particle beam within a beam field of a scanning magnet to change a shape of the edge based on motion of the particle beam; and

one or more processing devices to receive information about a fixed aperture from a treatment planning system and to translate the information about the fixed aperture to configurations of the multiple leaves to define at least one edge of the device that mimics at least part of the fixed aperture as the particle beam is moved within the beam field.

9. The particle therapy system of claim 8, wherein the configurations comprise a series of positions for the multiple leaves.

The particle therapy system of claim 8, wherein the configurations comprise a series of positions for the multiple leaves, at least one of the series of positions defining the at least one edge of the device to trim an individual spot of the particle beam, the individual spot of the particle beam comprising a cross-sectional area of the particle beam.

11. The particle therapy system of claim 8, wherein the one or more processing devices are configured to receive information about a speed of movement of the particle beam, and to control movement of the first carriage and the second carriages based on the speed.

The particle therapy system of claim 8, wherein the one or more processing devices are configured to receive information about a target cumulative dose of radiation to be applied to positions on the irradiation target and to control the particle therapy system to apply the target cumulative dose.

13. The particle therapy system of claim 8, further comprising:

an energy degrader that is between the device and the patient, at least part of the energy degrader being movable into a path of the particle beam to receive the particle beam, the energy degrader comprising a material that allows the particle beam to pass through the energy degrader thereby reducing an energy of the particle beam, the energy degrader comprising multiple plates.

14. The particle therapy system of claim 8, wherein the one or more processing devices are configured to receive, from the treatment planning system, parameters comprising one or more of a shape of the irradiation target, a number of layers of the irradiation target to be irradiated with the particle beam, an irradiation dose for positions at different layers, and numbers of times different layers of the irradiation target are to be irradiated by the particle beam;

and

wherein the one or more processing devices are configured to control operation of the device based on at least one of the parameters.

15. The particle therapy system of claim 8, further comprising:

a synchrocyclotron to generate the particle beam; and

an energy degrader that is between the synchrocyclotron and the device, at least part of the energy degrader being movable into a path of the particle beam to receive the particle beam, the energy degrader comprising a material that allows the particle beam to pass through the energy degrader thereby reducing an energy of the particle beam, the energy degrader comprising multiple plates.

16. The particle therapy system of claim 15, wherein the energy degrader comprises multiple plates that are movable during motion of the particle beam.
