1. A system, comprising:
- a cable having a first length comprising an elliptical conductive core and a dielectric strip wrapped around the elliptical conductive core in a helix, wherein the dielectric strip is at least twice as thick as the elliptical conductive core, wherein the elliptical conductive core is configured to enable electromagnetic waves to be bound to a surface of the elliptical conductive core rather than the dielectric strip, wherein the dielectric strip surrounds a first portion of the elliptical conductive core in a first helix with a first pitch, wherein the dielectric strip also surrounds a second portion of the elliptical conductive core in a second helix with a second pitch, and wherein the first pitch is different from the second pitch, wherein the electromagnetic waves propagate along the elliptical conductive core without requiring an electrical return path; and
a coupler for launching or extracting the electromagnetic waves on or from the surface of the elliptical conductive core, wherein the coupler comprises a hollow waveguide having first and second metal plates, wherein the hollow waveguide facilitates generating an electric field intensity profile that prevents the electromagnetic waves from being exposed to an environment that adversely affects propagation of the electromagnetic waves along the elliptical conductive core, and wherein the coupler is separate from the cable and has a second length that differs from the first length of the cable.

Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a transmission medium for propagating electromagnetic waves. The transmission medium can include a conductor for guiding electromagnetic waves longitudinally along the conductor, and a shell surrounding at least a portion of the conductor for reducing exposure of the electromagnetic waves to an adverse environment that increases propagation losses of the electromagnetic waves. an elliptical conductive core, the elliptical conductive core having a first length; a waveguide coupler configured to transmit and receive electromagnetic waves with polarized fields along the elliptical conductive core, wherein the waveguide coupler comprises a hollow waveguide having first and second metal plates that are separated from an insulation layer; and a dielectric strip surrounding a first portion of the elliptical conductive core, wherein the elliptical conductive core is configured to enable the electromagnetic waves to be bound to a surface of the elliptical conductive core rather than the dielectric strip, wherein the surface comprises the insulation layer disposed between the elliptical conductive core and the dielectric strip, wherein the insulation layer has a first dielectric constant, wherein the dielectric strip has a second dielectric constant, and wherein the first dielectric constant exceeds the second dielectric constant, wherein the electromagnetic waves propagate along the elliptical conductive core without requiring an electrical return path, and wherein the elliptical conductive core is configured to preserve the polarized fields of the electromagnetic waves that propagate along the elliptical conductive core. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16)

a cable having a first length comprising an elliptical conductive core and a dielectric strip, the dielectric strip surrounding at least a portion of the elliptical conductive core, wherein the elliptical conductive core is configured to enable electromagnetic waves to be bound to a surface of the elliptical conductive core rather than the dielectric strip, wherein the surface comprises an insulation layer disposed between the elliptical conductive core and the dielectric strip, wherein the insulation layer has a first dielectric constant, wherein the dielectric strip has a second dielectric constant, and wherein the first dielectric constant exceeds the second dielectric constant, wherein the electromagnetic waves propagate along the elliptical conductive core without requiring an electrical return path, and wherein the dielectric strip reduces an exposure of the electromagnetic waves to an environment that adversely affects a propagation of the electromagnetic waves via the elliptical conductive core; and a coupler having a second length for launching the electromagnetic waves on the surface of the elliptical conductive core, wherein the coupler comprises a hollow waveguide having first and second metal plates that are separated from the surface of the elliptical conductive core. - View Dependent Claims (18, 19, 20)
